Two of Kansas biggest political figures sparred Saturday during a radio debate on Countryman's Kansas radio show on KNSS in Wichita. Longtime Congressmen Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt, both Republicans, are vying for the Senate seat Sam Brownback is vacating.
Several hot topics were debated, from the highly controversial topic of health care to a possible government takeover of our 401(k) accounts. One thing they both agreed on was that Washington DC is out of control.
"We're making a little history today," said Gene Countryman as he introduced the two candidates. "Representatives Moran and Tiahrt are sitting down for the first time ever on a broadcast venue."
The first caller asked the candidate's position on the health care topic.
"I strongly oppose the House version of the health care bill," Moran answered first. "I have spoken against it and have signed a pledge that if it's passed, I will immediately introduce legislation to repeal it. So the callers suggestion that I'm for a government takeover of health care is totally inaccurate."
But Tiahrt disagreed, saying Moran - has - supported government health care in the past.
"I think Jerry's memory is a little short on what SCHIP did," Tiahrt said. "That's the state child health insurance program, which actually moved people off of private insurance and onto Medicaid. It was a predecessor to what Obama is trying to do and he did vote for that."
The next caller asked about Guantanamo Bay terrorists possibly being tried on US soil.
"GITMO terrosists belong in GITMO," Moran said. "There's no doubt about the ease of working with President Obama on this. There has been absolutely no level of cooperation between the President and Republicans in the House. There has been no effort from Speaker Pelosi to reach out for our ideas."
Tiahrt again took issue.
"I think there is a difference between myself and Jerry on this and that is that he has voted to give citizens rights to terrorists," Tiahrt said.
"Absolutely untrue!" Moran fought back.
"He has voted to give terrorists the same civil rights that we have as citizens of America," Tiahrt continued. "I oppose that."
And finally, the two candidates mostly agreed on the issue of the federal government possibly taking over 401(k) accounts. While Tiahrt said he would eventually like to see a part of social security become a part of a person's estate when they die, Moran said the government has no business in any of it.
The primary election is August 8th.
