The Wichita City Council on Tuesday agreed to spend $1.5 million on infrastructure improvements associated with an expansion project at Botanica.

Botanica Inc. has raised $3.2 million in to construct a new children’s garden on its west side. Simpson & Associates Inc. is the general contractor.

The city funding will include road and utility work in connection with the new garden.

The overall project is designed to boost attendance, especially among younger families, at Botanica. The garden receives 90,000 to 100,000 visits per year, and Botanica has said it expects the expansion to yield at least another 10,000 visits.

“This is an investment of the future,” says Doug Kupper, director of the city’s parks and recreation department. He added later, “Botanica has proven their value by maintaining themselves” during a tough economic time.

The council approved the investment on a 7-0 vote.
