A Topeka city councilman says the city should move two elephants at the Topeka Zoo to a sanctuary in Tennessee.
Councilman John Alcala says the animal rights group Animal Outreach of Kansas has convinced him the zoo can't humanely care for the elephants, named Sunda and Tembo.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has said that the zoo's indoor and outdoor elephant space meets its accreditation standards.
Alcala says he will ask city manager Norton Bonaparte for a council work session to discuss the idea. He says he's willing to author a resolution calling for the elephants' move to Tennessee.
AZA spokesman Steve Feldman says the elephants are living a good life at the Topeka Zoo and disrupting their routine could hurt their health.
