A grinch may have already stolen Christmas at one Wichita business that helps alcoholics and drug addicts get on the right track. Toys-for-Tots donated gifts for children to Parallax in Southeast Wichita, but employees came to work Sunday morning and noticed the toys were gone.
The shed where the presents were being stored was broken into Sunday morning. Someone pried open the door and stole most of the toys inside.
"I was devastated yesterday," said Pat Lawrence, one of the employees.
Lawrence arrived at her coffee shop Sunday and noticed the door to the shed swinging open. Parallax had been storing gifts donated by Toys-for-Tots to give to their patient's children at their annual Christmas party.
"I came out the back door to take some trash out. The storage shed is always kept locked," she said. "When I came out the door, I saw the wind had caught the door on the right and it was blowing open. I knew something good wasn't happening."
The pry marks are still on the door. The lock was broken. Not all of the gifts were stolen, but it's pretty clear that whoever did this knew what was inside.
"All the donations that are made help people that have that need," Lawrence said. "For someone to come and do something like that, it's just devastating."
Lawrence vows that this grinch will not stop them from carrying on their yearly Christmas tradition at Parallax.
"I don't hold that vengefulness anymore against people, but whoever did this, I couldn't do it and have a good conscience about it. I hope it really bothers them."
Obviously, Parallax would like to have the toys back. If you have any information about who stole them, you can call Crimsetoppers anonymously at 267-2111. If your tip leads to an arrest, you'll be eligible for a cash reward.
