Operation Christmas Child is hoping to give millions of children a Merry Christmas this holiday.

Every year, the national organization sends millions of shoe boxes filled with small toys, school supplies and hygiene kits to poor and underprivileged children in 90 countries around the world.

In Wichita, Operation Christmas Child is on-track to collect more than 8,000 gift-filled shoe boxes. The boxes collected in Wichita will be shared with children in Mexico.

Last year, gifts from Wichita were sent to Madagascar.

On Saturday, local organizers will host a "Packing Party" in which all the donations will be loaded up and prepped for shipment. The event takes place at the Metro East Baptist Church, located at 333 N. 143rd Street East, from 10:00 to 2:00.

Those who would like to donate can still do so by dropping off small gifts at the church. Organizers say school supplies is especially welcomed as it is the only way many children are able to attend school with the necessary equipment.
