As thousands piled into Century II for Wednesday night's performance of Broadway's "Wicked," KAKE News went behind the scenes for an exclusive interview with the leading actress.
Marcie Dodd is the performance's leading lady, playing the role of Elphaba, better known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
"I love it," Dodd says. "It's an honor to be able to play a part like this."
Dodd arrives before any of her co-stars to prepare for the part. To play the role of Elphaba, Dodd has to undergo a head-to-toe transformation that includes covering herself in green makeup and tights.
Dodd says there are many reasons why she likes the character, in particular her ability to stand up and speak her mind.
"She kind of says, 'it's okay to be different'," Dodd laughed.
And she's very different; if not emotionally, then physically. As Elphaba, Dodd undergoes about 30 minutes of makeup with the help of her crew. Artist spread green makeup over her face, hands and chest. Then Dodd slips into a green tights that cover her legs and arms.
Add a wig and a pointed hat, and the transformation is complete.
At one point in the show, Dodd also wears a sequin-studded dress that weighs about 40 pounds, giving new meaning to the phrase, "It's not easy being green."
Dodd says the makeup doesn't bother her, but she has to stay cool to avoid sweating and causing the makeup to run. She says it will wash off after about ten minutes in the shower.
Out of makeup, Dodd says very few fans ever recognize her.
"I'm actually a pretty shy person," she said. "But every now and then somebody will catch a glimpse of green still on my ear."
Performances of "Wicked" have received rave reviews, and have been close to sold out practically every night at Century II. Performances run until November 8.
