As part of their D.A.R.E. graduation, Norwich school leaders convinced an Army Blackhawk helicopter team to land in the middle of the football field for the ceremony. KAKE’s Susan Peters got to ride along.

The students greeted the team’s dramatic entrance with cheers.

The message to the kids was dramatic as well. The principal of Norwich Schools, Deena Waltrip, was hit by a car on her way to school last year. The driver of the other car was in possession of alcohol and marijuana. Ever since, the Students Against Drunk Driving program has grown.

The Blackhawk team has another purpose. They’re also a Drug Demand Reduction Task Force and part of their mission involves speaking at D.A.R.E.

“It steers the kids against smoking, drinking and toward better lifestyle choices,” task force member Sgt. Matthew Asebedo said.

Administrators hope the students will remember today’s experience and associate the Blackhawk with something great and remember what it stands for.
