There's a ruling tonight in the wrongful death lawsuit involving the Carr brothers.
The families of the victims sued the state claiming the state was negligent because a paperwork error allowed Reginald Carr to get out of prison early. Just days after he was released, he went on a crime spree with his brother, killing five people in December of 2000.
The state of Kansas wanted the case thrown out. But Thursday, a judge agreed with the victims' families.
In his decision the judge said the state did not do what it was required to do for the victims. Now the judge says the only issue left for a jury to decide is what if any damages the state should pay.
