WASHINGTON (AP) -- The US Department of Energy plans to invest
up to $76 million for construction of a new ethanol plant in Kansas. The plant would produce more than $11 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol per year. It could be located in Colwich, Kansas -- outside of Wichita -- but the exact location is still being decided.

The investment is part of a $385 million investment the Energy Department is making in six new cellulosic ethanol plants around the country. Cellulosic ethanol is made from nonfood plants like corn stover, saw dust and switchgrass.

Construction of the plants are part of President Bush's plan to make cellulosic ethanol cost-competitive with gasoline by 2012.
