Just two days before the Roe vs. Wade anniversary, a Wichita group that protests abortion uses a recent citation against its “truth truck” to step things up before the benchmark case.
The “truth truck” is covered in graphic billboard-sized images. Operation Rescue says it’s one way it wages its battle against abortion.
“It’s very sad. It’s very graphic. It’s very horrific. But, that’s what an abortion is,” says Troy Newman, Operation Rescue West president.
The trucks most recent trip was to Bel Aire. Operation Rescue repeatedly parked it outside a woman’s home, who works at Doctor George Tiller’s clinic where abortions are performed.
“We believe it is our constitutional right,” says Newman.
But in the city of Bel Aire, you do not have the right to park what the city calls a portable sign. So, the city cited Newman.
He faces six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Newman says they were singled out.
City Attorney Lee Parker says they were simply enforcing the ban. He says it doesn’t matter what the sign says.
Newman says the truck faced a similar situation in Leawood, Kan. back in November. He doesn’t plan on backing down.
Operation Rescue plans on filing suit against the City of Bel Aire in the next few weeks. But, the city attorney says he’s found three court cases so far that support city rights to enforce portable sign bans.
