2-13-07 - More changes could be on the way for the Joyland amusement park. Although the sale isn't final, KAKE News has learned the potential buyers have plans for things other than amusement.

There was excitement when Joyland reopened last April after being closed the previous season because of unpaid bills and ownership changes.

But the 58-year-old amusement park could soon be rezoned. City of Wichita planning director John Schlegel says Joyland representatives came to the office to find out the process for rezoning the land for multi-family and commercial use.

Stan and Margaret Nelson still own the property on South Hillside. Margaret Nelson says they're still in negotiations with Michael Moodenbaugh to sell the property. Nelson says she's hopeful the sale will be finalized yet this month.

She says she doesn't know about the buyer's plans for the property. KAKE News attempted but was unable to contact Moodenbaugh for comment about rezoning plans.

The city tells us the plans will be to rezone land next to hillside as commercial and other parcels for multi family. Multi family is anything from tri-plexes to larger apartment units.

No word on whether the new owner's will want to include land the roller coaster and go cart track are on.

Before anything is rezoned the application would come before the metropolitan area planning commission for a public hearing.
