Jan. 13-- New safety devices installed to protect Kansas Turnpike toll booths worked well Tuesday.

An 18-wheeler northbound on Interstate 35 smashed into a toll booth Tuesday morning, south of Wellington. The highway patrol estimates the truck was traveling 60 miles per hour -- and there were no skid marks. The accident was about ten miles north of the Oklahoma state line.

Patrol spokesman John Walters said the 64 Richard Norton of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, is hospitalized in serious condition. It was not immediately determined if he fell asleep.

Walters said the concrete structures between lanes, to keep the booths from being hit, did their job, and the booth operator was not injured. And the booth remains intact.
