South Carolina newspapers and lawmakers are calling for Gov. Mark Sanford to step down after his latest round of confessions about his extramarital encounters.

Sanford tells The Associated Press he's "crossed lines" with women other than his Argentine mistress during his 20-year marriage, but he says he never had sex with them.

He calls his Argentine mistress his "soul mate," but says he's trying fall back in love with his wife.

State Sen. Larry Grooms is among 10 GOP senators calling on Sanford to step down. Grooms says his fellow Republican has "lost the moral authority to lead."

Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler says there's "no way" Sanford can continue as governor and that he's worried about "his mental well being."

The Greenville News said Sanford "has destroyed any shred of credibility" with what the newspaper calls "his lies unnecessarily added on top of other lies."
