The Fourth of July is less than a week away. But in many parts of Sedgwick County no fireworks are allowed during Independence Day celebrations.
While you can get fireworks in Wichita and other surrounding communities you can't buy them, sell them or shoot them in unincorporated Sedgwick County.
Still every year," In 620 square miles of the fire district we see fireworks going up in every square mile," said Sedgwick County Fire Chief Tim Millspaugh.
That's why this year the fire department decided to put up 400 signs to let people know fireworks are against the law and they can face up to a $1,000 fine for using them.
The fire department is also asking for feedback.
"What's going on here? Do people just not know or are they ignoring the law?" said Millspaugh.
Since the signs went out last Friday, 300 calls have come in. And the fire department found most people simply don't know fireworks are illegal here.
Even many who do know think it's ridiculous.
"Personally, I think you ought to be able to shoot your fireworks that we sell here in the City of Wichita," said Jason Griggs.
But many like Sedgwick County Resident Michael Dixson don't plan on breaking the law.
"Today we just bought the little poppers you can throw on the concrete. I want to follow the rules to teach my kids that yes I grew up with fireworks but we've got to follow the rules.
The fire department doesn't plan on extra enforcement this year because they simply don't have enough staff.
The fire department also says it only enforces the law. People who don’t like it should call their county commissioner.
