Thousands of people were up with the rooster Friday morning to start the holiday shopping season. Stores opened at the crack of dawn for shoppers ready to get down to business.

Diehard shoppers arrived long before stores opened to stake their spot near the doors. They stood in freezing cold to get what bargains on some hot items. Many shoppers say they were motivated by deep discounts on electronics.

The National Retail Federation expects sales for the 2003 Christmas shopping season to grow 5.7 percent over last year, making it the largest gain since 1999.
