Greedy banks and investors may have started the mess, but they did not, I repeat, DID NOT cause the issue to spiral out of control. That would be the businesses and the people. The government has tried various things to reassure the people that it is safe to spend to no avail. The only option left is the stimulus package. To those who call it a "spending bill", you are absolutely right. That is the point. The gov. is trying to get the money flow moving again, instead of the almost stand still it is at currently. P Location: my sources of how I understand it are various professors at WSU in economics and finance. Where is your knowledge coming from?

As I understand it, I understand it that way also. Government is spending all this extra money to get us to spend money. Makes a lot of sense doesn't it?! Giving us stimulus checks to entice us to spend more and STIMULATE the economy. If we don't spend then all the money you are hoarding will be useless later anyway! The price of food and other products is rising because we are not buying and they have to cover costs of the loss. Moral of the story, DO YOUR PART AND GO SHOPPING! LOL

In order to get Washington back under control, the U.S needs to adopt two Constitutional amendments. First, a line item veto amendment. This would greatly reduce pork that so often ruins good bills and promotes wasteful spending. Second, term limits for Congress. The Founding Fathers never intended for Congress to be full of career politicians. If you think elections is the answer; you're a fool. These jokers in Congress spend more time feathering their nest than doing the will of their constituents. Term limits would reduce a lot of the corruption and wasteful spending. While we're at it; get rid of the IRS and adopt the Fair Tax.

Government is a necessary evil. It must be feared and controlled. This is our money Congress is wasting. James, you have it absolutely right. This so-called stimulas package has us on the highway to socialism.

As you understand it: You understand it all wrong. Saying that "we the people" who are not consuming products and services is in part cause of this current problem is asnine. It is the end result of government home ownership policies that began 30yrs ago under the glorius Jimmy Carter years. This policy has flourished and banks started buying and selling loans that should have never been made.

Seems to me this has not much good so far and we are footing the bill for bad mistakes others have made. Lets fire the whole Washington bunch and put someone in there who can get things done without spending our great grandchildrens money. Wall Street is no better, let it alone somehow it will turn around might take awhile but it will on it's own. We the people need to take a strong stand or government will take everything over. The Dems have the power and most of the people gave it to them but, there are still a few of us who think the change that has come is not that good for the country. It has nothing to do with black or whilte issue, it has to do with how OUR tax dollars are spent and what the American people all the people are getting in return. Why should those who have, pay for those who do not have is beyond me. Those that have a little have worked hard for it and been on the job for it. Not talking about the super rich but, the ones that are making a little over $200thousand.

OK, I am not a economic major, but I think this is how I understand the current problem. Banks got in trouble, so they stopped loaning money. Companies needing the money have to come up with money some other way. This means downsize. The people, yes the American people, see the companies are downsizing and stop spending. Because the people are not spending, companies, again, start to downsize. Stores don't need to order as many product to sell, so factories layoff. Stores aren't selling what they need to pay the bills, so stores layoff or close. This makes the people even more fearful OR jobless, so there is even more increase in saving. So, the people who have changed their spending habits in the last 6 months are really part of the cause of the mess, the continuation of the economic decline. Since the people aren't spending money, the government had to create the "stimulus" package. We the people are part of the problem, therefore should be part of the solution.

I want to respond to Pat from Wichita Feb 27 post. Pat, this is NOT a stimulus bill. IT is a power grab, a vote purchase and a host of fat favors and paybacks to their constituents. "give this a chance to work" I really don't think so. We have a group of arrogant opportunists at the helm right now. They deserve all the insults human kind can muster! Socialism does not work, it is evil. If we don't stop this we will be living under even more government oppression. Our WWII vets will have fought and died in vain.

Pat you're all for that spending bill? Did you even bother to take a look at it and see what all is in there? IF not, look at it then let us know if you feel that's going to turn the economy around. What really bothers me is that people just blindly believe every word that is said instead of educating themselves and thinking for themselves. How sad.

Brian: I understand taxes are taken from everyone's paycheck. Now...for the sake of argument say you had $1,000 of taxes taken from your paycheck in one year. At the end of the year, the gov't "refunds" you $1,000 or in many cases, more for taxes paid. Now, did you REALLY pay tax?

The uneducated and blind are such easy targets --> (Cindy in Mulvane) Obama has signed the LARGEST tax & spendulas bill in American history. Folks like Cindy need to educate themselves. READ / INVESTIGATE from several news sources not just msnbc or cnn. ALL of our futures and kids futures are at stake here, forget party lines.

This is a good idea. It's time the powers that be in Congress realized that the people do care and that we do have a voice. We're in for change alright people... but we can still turn the change FOR the people if we all get involved and are vocal enough!!! As for the stimulas package... Cindi do you even have a clue as to what is in there? That was pure pork barrel spending and what the president said wouldn't be in there, for example no more no bid contracts, there were bunches of them. He doesn't even know what he signed and that's scary in itself!

If you really want to wake up to what's happening read "The Rise of the Fourth Reich" by Jim Marrs. He documents everything and what is before us is unlike anything you could imagine. I am neither Rep, Dem or any party. Tea Parties are ok but we need to hold ALL the politicians and bankers to the fire because it is NO accident this happened. Wake up America and put aside your political prejudices.

Here's a question for everyone to think about... Instead of giving all this money to the banks and cop. offices, why doesn't he just divide it up like Bush did, and give to those who actually need it? Giving it to the banks is all good and fine, but when people go and get a loan, how are they going to pay that loan back if they are loosing their jobs? Think about that and quit complaining about all of this, and lets see what happens.

To Cindi & Ms. cant believe it, you need to realize that you are living in REPUBLICAN central. No problem as long as ole George W. is driving this country into a hole we'll never crawl out of (in the name of finishing daddy's little war). Now, however we have a black dem for president and they CANNOT handle it. Heck, I'll bet history will show how messed up Bush was, but they will never admit a republican screwed up - it's all on Obama. Even when the new plan works, they will always have a problem. You see they lost the election. I have never known a Republican that was a GOOD loser. Republicans lost - get over it. He promised change and we shall see if it works. Status quo is over. Out of curiosity, where was this attitude about the BILLIONS bush wasted on the WRONG war?!!!

Ms. Can't Believe Thank you!!I am so sick of all this complaining about Obama and the stimilus. Where was all this complaining when Bush was in office?? The problems in our nation have to be addressed and some kind of plan like the stimulis put into action. Bush caused this mess and now President Obama has to try and clean it up.

Bush??? Don't think so "Ms Can't believe this". Bush had no choice but to go to war. The economy on the other hand is something he inherited from the criminals in the Clinton admin. Which by the way are the ones Obama has advising him. He pushed for banks and mortage companies to hand out all the bad loans they could. And greedy corporations such as BofA jumped on it wholeheartedly. All under the guise of helping America realize her dream. Well, the dream broke apart when suddenly we had a war put in our front yard. Bush took a really bad rap due to the fact that his family has been in oil all his life. But believe it or not he did not single handedly determine OPEC prices. If he could have he would have. Big oil nations determined our election by getting the media in the Democrates ball field in 2006. Since they have taken over the Senate we have seen oil go down because those nations now have what the want. Who ever is in power both National State County and City must cut spending!!

"That means roughly 50% do not have any "skin" in the game" WHAT are you talking about? Take your paycheck and add up how much is taken for taxes...medicare, SS, state/federal income and tell me again 50% don't pay taxes?! Wrongly at that...visit www.losthorizons.com and find out why!

The Boston tea party was a protest against taxation. Taxation without representation. Now, we have country with representation without taxation!!! 98% of all taxes in this country are paid by 49% of Americans. That means roughly 50% do not have any "skin" in the game. So when senators like Chuck Schumer of NY tells the Senate that Americans don't really care about pork." I have one thing to say...you're HALF right Chuckles.

Mary Brand - I know you and your head is so far in the sand, it's unreal. The Bush administration has ruined this country and we wouldn't need a stimulus package if it weren't for George W. Bush's arrogance and irresponsibility. At least President Obama is trying to fix this country and is making banks and corporations take responsiblity for their actions instead of just allowing them to continue stuffing their pocketbooks at our expense like they have been. The recession needs to be addressed. Bush didn't care for anyone except his rich supporters and friends who voted him in.

I think that they should make Wall Street and the Big Bankers pay back every red cent that was given to them. Putting money into the hands that it doesn't belong in is what is the problem. The economy is seeing the backlash of poor spending, and this bill isn't putting the money into our hands, the people who need it most, but into things that aren't relevant to pulling Americans out of debt. How come we are over a trillion dollars in debt, but we can afford to stimulate the greedy and undeserving?

This is to the person that wrote "its already signed so get over it"! That is the very thing and attitude that has got us in this mess by letting the government make OUR decisions for us. It is time to take back our country and tell those idiots to take a flying leap. Preferrably some where else. Our government is OUT OF CONTROL at our expense. If they need help balancing the budget I would be more than happy to help. Good gravy it does not take a professer or a BANKER to do that! We are being jerked around by a bunch of people that could care less about us or our country. Just this morning Bank of America got caught giving billons more in bonuses. So see they are still jsrking us around.

Bush is not the issue. What is at issue is goverment running amuck. We need less legislation of our home lives and more checks and balances on laws and thier makers! Bush was president at a time in our history that would have made ANY president look bad. Have you forgotten that Bush did not fly those planes that attacked our nation? Have you forgotten why he sent us to war? Have you forgotten the innocent faces of lives lost and scarred forever because of 911? Lets rally around our country. Lets forget political affiliations. Let us as a nation say enough to greed and make our lawmakers responsible. Our nation would be better off if we got our families out of debt not the companies and banks. We would be better off if we made big companies pay big taxes on goods they produce out of country for a song and then get big profits from us. Obama wants to stimulate the economy he needs to quit asking his empty headed freinds and ask the citizens out here what we think.

So who's bringing the scones? What will the festivities include? Who will be the highlighting entertainment? Do I need to dress up in a sundress and hat with gloves?! Get real! The man has a plan. Give it some time to work! This country gave Bush a chance and you see where that got us. It is always harder to fix a problem than to just do it right. Don't hate the "clean up man" because creating a bigger mess won't help the problem either.

First of all the pork is out of control. Our President has sold us a bill of goods. The long term implications of the massive gov't debt is dollar devaluation and high interest rates. We all need to look to the future and realize just how scary this unbridled gov't spending is. Just remember commodities the world over are valued in US dollars, we shall rue the day confidence returns and investors the world over stop gobbling up dollars to ease their own fears. And for all those people who live off a fixed income or who are on the verge of retirement, get ready for taxes on capital to increase. Positive change right? Maybe in four years people will not vote for the smooth talker who exploits human emotion to gain election. But hey, as far as I can tell he is still on the campaign trail. Anyone turned on the TV and not seen Obama lately? While on the TV has anyone heard him talk about anything other than broad generalities?????? Amen for the tea party!

Bush was the KING of the deficit you speak of, and not only that, but he passed a "stimulus" as well and we can see how well that worked out. HAHA! You can bicker an moan over who started this mess. Why don't you go back to 1913 and the creation of the "Federal" Reserve, a PRIVATE bank who taxes your labor with the jack-booted thugs of the IRS, then loans back the money to you us with interest. You can simply stop all of this by auditing the fed and abolishing it. Ron Paul has brough 2 bills in the House in both of these matters. At least the is a real republican left to stand up for the Republic. Look around and see whats really going on. Seems our government is starting to see us as enemy slaves.
osama bin laden will still take over this tea party
We have to do something! this crowd in Washington is green as grass, as in Green morphs into democratparty which morphs into liberal then morphs into socialist finally morphing into Communist. When the economy is wrecked, we are all broke and depending on the government to live and will be their slaves. I firmly believe it is part of a plan which was hatched a long time ago. WE HAVE TO FIGHT BACK1111
Is it possible that all who want to see a stop to all these stimulus bills and see an end to so much government control pull together and do something? Our rights are being taken away and our right to free speech also.
This country is headed down in a big way. These stimulus bills are taxation without representation! We pay the bill but have no say in how the money is spent!!! Obama has done nothing he promised to do and signed the latest stimulus bill last week...what say they bail out people losing their homes and people burdened with medical bills and farmers losing their farms. No, they bail out businesses who don't know how to run their business and who give millions away in bonus' for the yahoo's who have run that business into the ground! There is something wrong with this picture...I love this country and I have great fears for it's future at the hands of our current representatives. God help us all!
Reading over some of these comments make me realize how little some people really understand about what brought us to where we are today. One person noted that Clinton started the program that encouraged people to move from welfare to work. In reality, that was part of Newt Gingrich's contract with America. I do agree that Clinton supported it. The programs were still in place until the last stimulus bill passed, moving us back toward the days of welfare. Greed and a lack of Congressional oversight is what brought us to the place we are today. The Democrats (who have controlled the Senate since 2006 and the House since 2004) turned a blind eye and deaf ear while many filed through and warned them that there was a problem brewing with Fannie and Freddie (oversight of which is their responsibility, not the president’s). They said there was no problem, and the American people are left paying the bill for their stupidity. If something does not stop Obama we will find ourselves sitting under a socialist government controlling every breath we take and every thought we think, and running America to its destruction.
I keep hoping that everyone who voted for Obama, will awake from the dream they are having, and face what is happening to our country. Dont tell me you all still believe all the lies he has told. WAKE UP AMERICA !!!!!!!!
obama and the left wing congress must be stopped. they are destroying all our hopes and dreams.their lies are always spewing forth. this is truely a unholy administration. and i truely fear for my rights and my kids rights, and i think you do too.
if ALL of you in the "OBAMA ARMY" would just do the math you would realize we are about to go under as a country. you can NEVER spend your way out of debt. get ready for a rough 4 years. all the PORK in the bills is not going to help the economy! THANK YOU OBAMA! THE CHANGE WE NEED WILL BE ANY CHANGE WE CAN GET OUR HANDS ON WHEN NOBODY HAS A JOB!!!
I think if people would realize that he is trying to clean up the mess that the Bush administration has created over the last eight years and give it a chance to work instead of being nonsupportive - everyone who is not supportive is only worrying about themselves and not our country as a whole - when did people get so selfish??
In Clintons defense, he set up ALOT of programs to help people get self sufficient such as the welfare to work program which took away the excuses not to work like training, transportation, & child care WHICH BUSH SCRAPED HIS FIRST MONTH IN OFFICE. Ever since then, the economy has declined. Without those valuable resources alot of people lost alot of the ground they had accomplished. BUSH was for the people alright, the rich people who misappropriated their funds and now are begging for help. While us poor folk are still poor and feeling the pinch even more. Though Obama is not Jesus Christ maybe he can do some miracles in this country.
I think that all though Bush was not a great president, he tried which is what any of us would do, and what Obama is doing now. He is trying to do the right thing. I also feel that if Bill Clinton put in the effort into the country instead of putting his cigars in places they should not be, MAYBE we would not be as bad as we are now.
Crystal... we have been wondering the same thing. Instead of billions to corp that help thier ceo's and lay off thousands, what about investing in each and every household. Send out a family check of 20k perhousehold and see if that doesn't stimulate the economy. Gee, that would keep me from loosing my home! Then most of us could buy that car, groceries, pay our bills, and keep buisnesses doors open. Let the people vote by doing something to keep the buisnesses they care about going. After that money works its way into the economy then maybe rescue a few companies that really need it.
How exactly is Obama creating fear? I certainly am not fearful. I know many people who are scared of losing their jobs, but that fear is created by companies cutting back in ANTICIPATION of rough times ahead. What else is there to be fearful of? I understand the worries of losing a job, but what else are we suppose to be fearing?
Greedy banks and investors? It had nothing to do with all the sub prime loans banks were coerced into making? You do know who created Fanny Mae, right? Sure banks bought and sold these risky loans. And for years, our government approved with little oversight. This so called stimulas bill is bloated to the max with pork and paybacks. Democrats and Republicans alike loaded it up with spending that will do nothing to stimulate our economy. You want to stimulate the economy? Cut taxes. How about giving tax cuts to small business and not to those who aren't paying taxes now. Your various left wing professors at WSU would never agree to that concept. All Obama is doing is creating fear...which leads to a nanny state. That is what Obama wants. I do not have to be an economist to see what is going on here.
