Vets Battle Against Vietnamese Soldier Memorial

September 11 – Veteran's memorial park is full of the names of those who died in America’s wars, but now another battle is brewing on the park ground over who belongs there.

Those of the Vietnamese community are asking for the right to build a shrine to South Vietnamese and American soldiers next to the other monuments in Veteran's Memorial Park.

But some veterans consider it sacrilege calling the park-hallowed ground for Americans.

Other veterans ask for compromise suggesting the South Vietnamese be honored elsewhere such as a park off 21st street near a Vietnamese market.

The park board doesn't make any decisions in this case. The board will wait to decide whether to bring this up again in October, but even then they're only making recommendations to the city council.

It will be up to the city to make a final decision.
