Boeing Cuts?

Updated: Thu 5:29 PM, Jun 19, 2003

More job cuts could be coming to Boeing. Published reports from the Paris Air Show report more employment cuts might be coming to Boeing's Commercial Division.

Many Wichita aircraft workers are coming to realize there's no such thing as job security. Ever since major layoffs started at Boeing a year and a half ago, any comments made on Boeing employement changes are scrutinized closely.

When Boeing Commercial Division President Alan Mulally says employment could go lower, it's sort of like the old E.F. Hutton commercial. When top Boeing brass talk, people in Wichita listen.

Boeing has cut more than 33,000 jobs since the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer quotes Mulally as saying employment could ''go lower.''

In referring to job cuts, Mulally says if production doesn't get better, then employment could come down some more. But Mulally was speaking about employment in the Seattle area.

As for Wichita, Boeing spokesman Fred Solis says the direction for employment hasn't changed at the local plant from earlier this year.

Solis says attrition will probably take care of any downturn here. But he says that doesn't mean there won't be more layoffs. In fact, there will be more layoffs and 60 day WARN notices going out Friday in Wichita. Boeing says there will likely be fewer than 50 layoffs and WARN notices going out tomorrow.

So far this year, employment has actually increased a couple of hundred positions since the end of last year.
