The FBI has been called in to investigate a train derailment in southwest Kansas. It happened Tuesday night around 7 p.m. in Montezuma. The train crashed just as it entered town.
FBI officials say the train was westbound on the Dodge City-Colorado line when someone switched the track. They believe the track may have been intentionally tampered with, a violation of federal law. Residents say a special key is needed to switch the tracks, but the lock is easy to pick.
Two engineers were trapped for close to an hour. They were later treated for minor injuries.
The crash caused hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto a nearby road. The area was evacuated for two hours. Clean up crews say it will take about four days to clear the rest of the damage.
