The Oklahoma-based Wyandotte Nation is marking the first anniversary of its 7th Street Casino in Kansas City, Kan., on Friday with little fanfare. But the tribe has a lot of confidence that it has proven itself worthy of running such a venture.

The casino opened a year ago in a former Masonic lodge that got a $20 million facelift to house about 400 slot-like gambling
machines, a steakhouse and a lounge. Since then, business has been
brisk.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., has received about $397,000 in tax revenues from the casino.

The state still contends the casino is operating illegally. The attorney general's office has appealed a federal judge's order dismissing the state's challenge to the operation.
