Oklahoma and Florida will play for the National Championship Thursday night, but Wichita is making its own case as a title town, thanks to an eighth grade powerhouse known as the Aztecs.

This group of eighth graders dressed in shirts and ties Tuesday as they attended an impromptu pep rally at Wichita City Hall.

"These boys have been working hard since January raising money. It's been hard work, learning over 200 plays," said the Aztec coach, Manny Martinez.

The team raised over $1,300 each for a shot at the title. Their efforts paid off and they won a National Championship in Daytona, Florida.

"They played against teams from Maryland, Ohio... They proved themselves and the city, they went 9 and 0," Martinez said.

Their perfect season was recognized by the Mayor and City Council Tuesday. The ceremony ended with a standing ovation.

The next time these young men suit up, it will be on the high school gridiron.

According to Coach Martinez, the Aztecs are the first eighth grade team from the entire state of Kansas to win a National Championship.
