Clarence "Buddy" Crumble, the man who shined shoes inside the Sedgwick County Courthouse for much of his life, has died.

Crumble was featured as one of Hatteberg's People in 2005. Courthouse officials had moved Crumble's shoeshine stall to the basement so they could make room for security upgrades following the 9/11 attacks. The move caused Crumble's business to begin crumbling itself.

After the story aired, and with the help of an attorney, Crumble gained tremendous public support. He was eventually allowed to move back to the main lobby where he made most of his money. He was known for his love of jazz music and easygoing conversations with clients.

Crumble died Friday, Dec. 19th, of complications from pneumonia. He was 78 years old.

"He loved people," said Craig Black, Crumble's great-nephew. "When you love people, people love you back."

Black says his uncle shined thousands of shoes over his 30+ years in the courthouse. Some judges and attorneys were regular customers. Crumble even once shined the shoes of the President's Secret Service.

But as much as Crumble loved shoe shining, Black says it wasn't enough to buy insurance or put much away in savings. It's left very little money to pay for Crumble's funeral.

Black says his family is not asking for a hand-out, but that donations to help bury his uncle would be greatly appreciated.

"If you talked to him or listened to his jazz, he always had a story to tell," Black said. "He was a conversationalist. He had a story to tell anybody."

Black says the family has already had to delay the funeral once because of short funds. They're hoping to raise enough over the weekend to give Crumble a proper burial on Monday morning.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 on Monday, Dec. 29th at Jackson Mortuary, 1125 East 13th St. The mortuary has set up a fund to help pay for Crumble's services. Those wishing to help may send donations to the address above, or call the mortuary directly at 262-5431.

Anonymous, I love you, and you are my hero, not for only being a soldier, but for not being a dummy like most of these people.

Give us a break and if you don't want to donate to his funeral expenses..don't! But please don't be so judgemental. I am sure some of you have never lived pay check to pay check. So, until that happens don't be so high and mightly. Maybe he was more concerned about his next meal, paying his bills and not asking for help while he was alive!

May God forgive those of you with hatered in your hearts. Buddy was not a fixture in the court house, he was a part of everyones life in one way or another. He was a loving man to those who loved him, even to those like those of you who have hatered in your hearts. He loved people and pleople loved him back. For those of you who are calling him stupid, I know you may not have all you need in order, no one ever plans for death. Buddy was a great man and he did not plan on dying, Buddy wanted to live for a much longer time. Buddy was a very smart man and lived a life full of excitement and has meet many people in his life. He was that kind of man that drew everyones heart close to his. The family is not begging or requesting any thing but love in return for all the love Buddy gave to all he came across. For those of you who did tribute to Buddy's homegoing the family is in great appreciation. No matter how much people have hatred for this man & this story, God has love for all of you.

liste anon- you chose to fight for this country and i have one child fighting for this country and two other relatives doing the same so they didnt get time home either so dont tell me crap about no holidays with family just like you its what they wanted to do.quite frankly if your mad about fighting for your country then stop fighting but dont get on her and complain about it or someone else because a person passed away or be able to handle the fact that your comments made were just that cruel you called a dead man stupid did you think that would make you look smart, just cause your in the military doesnt make you look smart and im on here typing because i paid my cable bill.yes jesus died for all of us but your not the only soldier in battle or with a family so go back to your troop or battalion and read those nasty cruel words you wrote about a elderly dead man and see what they think oh thats right your anonymous my bad.god bless america and the people fighting to protect it.

I sleep just fine at night, and no one was name calling but it was nice of you do that and call it our words. Please take a deep breath, it's apparent that your emotions are unstable and your ability to think outside of the box is lacking. I have worked my way up, from making minimum wage to more. It's a survival of the fittest.

Well omg I people all over don't make and hourly wage but they still can plan for their own deaths. And by the way i have feelings and my heart is just fine i am just tired of people not planning for the own futures like retirement and death. And by the way i didn't get any holidays with my family again since i'm in IRAQ making it free for you to type what you want and say what you want on here. So either pick up a rifle and serve with me and be part of the soulution or sit back and let me fight for your freedom. Only two defining forces have died for you Jesus Christ died for you soul. And the American Soldier died for your freedom.

sounds bad and anon9:51,wow your heart and feelings must be in your back pockets and your sitting on them.how could you be so cruel even if you dont want to help thats your right but to be nasty around the holidays how sad.the man is dead and your calling him stupid wow,its not like the man was making and hrly wage or getting a paycheck he was shinning shoes for 30 years had he had children im sure they would have taken care of this but it was written in the paper that he only had great nephews or nieces. im sure noone called you personally asked for your help so why get your panties and boxers twisted, jeeze go find your heart and put it back were it belongs before you get old.

I agree with Anonymous (9:51am). I donate, volunteer, donate more, help more....and then there is always other people who need something. I'm sure he was an exceptional man, but with the tough financial times already, it's difficult to say OK to this. Everyone needs help.....but we can't keep giving to those who don't help themselves. I'm sure this comment will be attacked thoroughly, but think about the bigger picture. Since education, food and housing assistance is given by the government, I would have to question that no one knew he was going to pass away? That's what we do, we grow old and ultimately die. Please plan....

Why should anyone except his family have to pay for this guys funeral. He should have prepared and had life insurance. I am so sick and tired of stupid people not taking care of their own affairs and expect someone else to pick up the tab.(ie the tax payers) I have life insurance, to insure my wife doesn't have to worry about taking care of me when i am dead and gone. It's called prior planning!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 28, 2008 at 09:15 PM
How many of the people from the court house who knew this man are going to step up and help pay for the funeral? I'll bet not many if any!! Like someone said they will just set back and say "that poor family". How about if they set jars up in the resturants for donations so that more people can help. Bet they would get a lot more money that way as people are always more apt to donate in such a manner.

its amazing how many people who knew him for 30 years will sit back and say, "awww that poor family..." instead of help his family. sickening.

I think it is terrible that you titled this story "Courthouse Fixture Dies". Out of respect for this dear man, you should have used his name and if you must, subtitle "Courthouse Fixture Dies". He was a human, not a fixture. God rest his soul.

Memory eternal, Clarence. May those that knew him find strength & comfort in each other & their faiths.
