Hit and Run Accident

Updated: Wed 11:30 AM, Jun 25, 2003

A hit and run accident sends one man to the hospital and leaves police with only a few clues. The hit and run happened at 21st and 119th Street in West Wichita. Police need your help finding the suspect, while the victim wants you to learn from his mistake.

Steve Morford is recovering from a broken leg, a concussion and a skull fracture but he's lucky to be alive. Steve was jogging late at night on 119th Street. He had a walkman on and was running close to the road when someone hit him from behind and then left him for dead. "I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would get hit," Morford says. "I just never thought this would happen to me."

Police are searching for clues.

Detective Trollope with Wichita Police says, "At this point we are looking for whatever information we can get on this car. We had some evidence at the scene: a side view mirror and an antenna."

Trollope says many people are now exercising outdoors in the nice weather and what happened to Steve needs to be a warning. Here are some safety tips to always follow if you exercise outdoors:

  • Try to run in the daylight
  • If you do run at night, wear reflective gear
  • Don't wear walkmans because it's harder to hear cars approaching
  • Don't exercise on the road. Find a route with sidewalks.
  • Pick a well-lit area.

Steve hopes the person who hit him will be caught soon. He does plan on jogging again outdoors, but he'll put safety first. If you have any information on this hit and run call the Wichita Crimestoppers. Remember you can remain anonymous and if your tip leads to an arrest you'll receive a $1,000 reward.

Stever didn't get a chance to see the car that hit him, so police are relying on eyewitnesses to come forward.
