It's an idea, Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer said, could help develop downtown. Creating an entertainment district would mean people could walk around with alcoholic drinks in designated areas. But for Wichita to get the "district" it must first look to the state for the okay.

"I've talked to other cities about what they think about it and they're saying it could benefit us also," said Carl Brewer, the Wichita Mayor.

"I think it's good to see city leaders and county leaders working to energize the area around the arena," said State Representative Jim Ward, (D) Wichita.

It's not a new concept, but Brewer claims it's worth taking a look at. Creating an entertainment district: a strict, designated, possibly fenced area downtown that would allow people to venture from one venue the next with alcoholic beverages in hand.

"If you look at Bricktown, Power and Light, Old Town, there are some similarities between the two," said Brewer.

For the city to have this area, whether it's just during events like Riverfest, final Friday or year round, state lawmakers would have to make some exceptions to the state liquor laws for the proposed area.

"The city will put it together in their packet of things they bring to the legislature. It's going to be a busy year in Topeka," said Ward. "This doesn't cost money, so it has a much better chance of getting a hearing and having action taken."

"Currently, we have it as an agenda item or part of our state legislative issues. Our lobbyists will take it to Topeka and hopefully we can get some type of bill," said Brewer.

State leaders said laws involving alcohol tend to be controversial so the city would have to prove the change would enhance Wichita's entertainment value, provide an economic boost and be done safely.

"In Kansas City, they have the ability and it's been very affective," said Ward.

State lawmakers like Jim Ward said it's an idea that could bring new life to Wichita, something most city's look forward to, especially right now.

"Anything that moves us forward, economically in these times of challenge is a positive thing," said Ward.

City officials said they're getting feedback from interest groups around the city right now before going to city council. The council would finalize the idea for the December 2nd agenda.

State leaders say if the move makes it to Topeka, it could be passed May. It would then come back to the city for specific zoning.

yes!! please bring this to Wichita!!!! right now, underage kids have NOTHING TO DO! If we had a place where we could go, hang out, and people watch that would be great! yay!! oh, and p.s.- not all underage kids are looking for a place to drink so keep your ignorant liberal remarks to yourself

can you attempt to get a grip on crime, stabbings, daily shootings before you think of bringing more dangerous activities?? i mean seriously people are scared to go to any club in wichita because it is a DAILY occurance, there was what more than a month straight that this happened every weekend at a club. Also not to mention it is ok to promote drinking for kids, can we find something that is fun that dosnt include drinking and drugs.. maybe we need a new group to help our lacking mayor find new bright ideas.

Big waste of money! Wichita is a conservative place and always will be. Most of the citizens of Wichita watches every dime they spend. Arena is going to be a big waste of money. The arena in KC is cheaper than ours, it holds more people, and both arena was schedule to start construction at the same time and yet theirs is already done and where is ours? Big waste of my tax dollars.

I would much rather see jobs come to the city than a area where we all can walk around drinking. Why not the casino? At least there would have been good entertainment right here in the city, oh and it would of created jobs cause someone has to run it, but that wasnt a good idea!!

We have this ready to go! It's called Old Town. Don't you dare betray those businesses by pulling people to some other part of town!

i thought that was what the river walk was gonna be and we see how far it has gone....i thought old town was the entertainment district already.....this jus sounds like another was to add the sells tax increase like the city did for the downtown arena which isnt much bigger than the colisiem.....city leaders.....grow up!!! and no we will never have a football or basketball team in this town.....wichita is not big enough or will they support it...people are too interested in gettinginot to huge debt and working 7 days a week in aircraft and then being mad at the company becayse they have to

Its is a stupid idea put alcohol out in open and let people walk around ,drinking, when the people of wichita voted down gambling in city,at least a nice hotel, and gamling casino on river bank could have brought in lots of money ,so the property taxes could have been lowered and now you want let people drink out in the open ,now really use your heads for once in this city

Alan from Clearwater maybe you should stay in clearwater on the weekends. I frequent old town often and have never once seen a DUI check point there, other places yes. Only newbie drinkers like yourself get caught or you just cant handle your alcohol. Plus Wichita can NOT support entertainment area's like OKC and KC

Its amazing the morons in Wichita. It would be nice to see something like this in this god forsaken town but there are the morons that have nothing good to say about something that would be nice for this city.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 9, 2008 at 07:29 PM
So they can give you a dui when you leave?

Posted by: Alan Location: Clearwater on Nov 9, 2008 at 05:37 PM
People don't go to Old Town on weekends, because of all the police check-points. Rein in the WPD, and you just might have better entertainment downtown. Stop trying to make city revenue based on DUI's.

It's a good idea and will bring more money to the city

I thought Old Town was supposed to be Wichitas' entertainment district?

Posted by: Dennis Location: Wichita on Nov 9, 2008 at 11:57 AM
A Red Light District? I thought that was illegal. I guess if it revitalized downtown and filled the city's coffers it would be deemed ok.

Posted by: Justin Location: Wichita on Nov 9, 2008 at 11:49 AM
Why bother?! With the economy the way it is and 2 of the aircraft companies already laying off who is going to be able to afford to go? Besides that every "bright idea" the city of Wichita has turns out to be a flop.....as one of the commenters stated the city needs to quit trying to be something they are not!! Wichita is not a Kansas City or a Oklahoma City and will be nothing more than a ghost town when the aircraft companies finally move their work overseas or to Mexico as they are in the process of doing now.

LETS MAKE SHURE THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE NOT EXPOSED TO THE DANGERS OF SECOND HAND SMOKE!!! BUT IT IS OK TOO LET THEM SEE A BUNCH OF DRUNKS WALKING AROUND DOWNTOWN ACTING STUPID THEN GETTING INTO THEIR CARS AND DRIVING DRUNK AND KILLING SOMEONE!! I JUST CANT BELEIVE THE CITY GOV. CAN NOT COME UP WITH ENTERTAINMENT THAT DOES NOT HAVE BOOZE IN IT.AND AGAIN WHY CANT WE COME UP WITH SOMETHING ON OUR OWN W/O DOING SOMETHING THAT ANOTHER CITY IS DOING??

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 9, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Quit trying to do or be something your not Wichita.

Posted by: Steve Location: Wichita on Nov 9, 2008 at 08:39 AM
I think this is a very good idea. Anyone who has ever been to the Power and Light District in KC or Bricktown in OKC knows that we are very much behind.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Wichita on Nov 9, 2008 at 12:37 AM
Does this mean we will get a pro football team like they have in Kansas City & a pro basketball team like they have in OKC?

Posted by: James Location: w on Nov 8, 2008 at 09:43 PM
The only reason the Wichita city council would approve this is if some entity is putting money in their pockets

Posted by: g Location: mulvane on Nov 8, 2008 at 09:34 PM
you don't want a casino cos it might bring more crime--lol--but you think an entertainment district won't bring just as much crime--lol--you've already got more crime than some of the big cities in california, stand up proud wichitans
