Kansans Cleaning Up After Night of Wild Weather

June 17 - Kansas residents begin the task of cleaning up the damage left by a night of wild weather. Friday night's storms brought rain, straight line winds and even a few reports of tornadoes.

The storm system moved eastward across the state toppled trees and power lines and damaged roofs. The National Weather Service says winds reached speeds of between 60 and 70 miles per hour.

In Goodland, witnesses say a twister touched down briefly, removing a large section of the roof of a home and damaging a nearby church. In Sheridan County, strong winds blew out the windows in several homes and toppled some irrigation sprinkler systems.

As the storm moved towards Hutchinson, the tornadoes disappeared but the winds didn't die down. In South Hutchinson, nearly 80 mile per hour winds tossed a large roof onto a car at the Crystal Square Apartments, forcing renters in about a dozen apartments to leave the homes in the middle of the night.

In Wichita, some movie goers at the Starlight Drive-In experienced the storm first hand. Bobby Titus says he and his family first noticed a dark haze coming from the west. Suddenly, a large gust of wind tossed the family right out of their truck and then pelted all six of them with debris. They suffered minor cuts and scrapes.
