Volunteer Firefighter Admits To Torching Mulvane Home
|
|
Investigators said a 21-year-old Mulvane volunteer firefighter has admitted to setting a fire that destroyed a Mulvane home Sunday. The fire, in the 200 block of Miller, caused more than $100,000 in damage.
Investigators said the man, who lived in the home with his parents, admitted to setting the fire in a basement storage room before the family went to church.
Captain Lowell Ester says the call came in at about 9 a.m.. When units arrived, smoke was pouring out the eves of the home.
"We had a lot of difficulty finding the scene of the fire," said Ester. "The house had a lot of furniture and items in it."
Ester says they knew where the fire was, but weren't able to get to it before it spread out of control.
"We fought it for probably about an hour-and-a-half and finally it just worked it's way up into the first floor and attic and we had to go defensive and fight it that way," Ester said.
The man had been a volunteer firefighter for about four months. He was immediately fired after his confession, but so far he has not been arrested or charged in this case.
