A mayor in southwest Kansas says an 18-month-old boy in his town has died from E.coli infection and the toddler's brother is recovering from the same disease.

Liberal Mayor Joe Denoyer says Tanner Strickland died Wednesday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita and his brother is listed in stable condition.

Denoyer and Seward County Health Department Director Martha Brown say the incident is contained within the immediate family and there is no danger to the public. Brown said health officials are talking to everyone who might have come into contact with the children.

Brown is urging citizens to practice safe food handling techniques and to wash hands frequently as standard precautions.
