Lightning Strike Fire
KAKE News |
|
Lightning Strike FireA simple knock by an unidentified passerby, possibly a neighbor, saves a southwest Wichita family. Mike Phan's home in the 5600 block of west 42nd Street south was hit by lightning about 5:30am. But it was 7:00am before anybody knew the house was on fire. A passerby stopped and banged on the front door, waking Mike, his wife and son. They all made it out safely.
Neighbors say it felt and sounded like a bomb exploded around the time the house was hit. Nobody knew there was any damage until they heard sirens more than an hour later. Firefighters say the fire spread through the attic and that the home is a total loss. The Phans do have insurance, and are staying with church friends until they can figure out what to do next. Damage is estimated at about $180,000.
This was actually the second lightning strike house fire in Wichita Monday. The first in the 14000 block of east Sundance caused about $80,000 in damage. One firefighter suffered minor injuries while fighting that fire.
