Attorney General Steve Six is warning Kansans to be wary of unsolicited emails or calls requesting social security numbers or credit card numbers to confirm voter registration eligibility. Scams of this nature have been reported in other states.

Scammers may send messages asking for your social security number or financial information supposedly to register you to vote or to confirm your registration when they really want to commit identity theft.

As a rule, organizations conducting legitimate voter registration drives either contact you in person or give you a voter registration form that you fill out yourself. They will never ask you to provide your financial information.

To register to vote, contact the county election office in the county you live or fill out the Voter Registration Form online and return it to your county's election officer. Voter registration forms can be found at the web link below.

If you get an unsolicited phone call or email from someone who claims to need your Social Security number or other personal or financial information to register you to vote, file a complaint with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at the web link below.
