25 Year-Old Tradition Kicks Off Special Olympics
June 2 – A very memorable night for thousands of special athletes as opening ceremonies in Wichita begin.
Special Olympics athletes and members of law enforcement ran together holding the torch symbolizing the start of the Summer Games, June 2-4 at Wichita State University.
This is the 25th year of the Law Enforcement Torch Run at the Annual State Summer Games
Over 500 officers ran from six different locations across Kansas, covering more than 1,500 miles of roadway.
Over 1,300 athletes compete in aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, powerlifting, tennis and track & field Friday to Sunday afternoon in Wichita.
On Friday, athletes competed in aquatics, powerflifting, tennis, gymnastics and cycling. All track and field events kick off on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. and run until noon on Sunday.
Also on Saturday, athletes and family members have the opportunity to spend time at the Koch Olympic Village playing games between competitions.
