Wichita BOE Gives Finance Plan An F
Not enough is the message the Wichita school district is sending to the state Supreme Court as it decides if the state legislatures school finance plan is adequately funding education in Kansas.

Now Wichita’s superintendent is blasting local lawmakers.

USD 259 Superintendent Winston Brooks made his message clear to the court, “our board of education has decided to file a brief saying to the court that the legislature gave it a good try but they're way short and we want them to fix it.”

Brooks says the legislature tried and failed to provide enough money to teach Wichita kids as they should be taught.

Yet this year's plan provides 28 million more dollars for Wichita, with the promise of more in the future.

Brooks says that the segmented approach doesn't meet the Supreme Court's mandate to the legislature.

Wichita senator and education committee chair Jean Schodorf says the plan; which provides 466 million new dollars for Kansas schools over three years, helps every district, including Wichita. But it doesn't fulfill every district's wish list.

“What happened was everyone wanted their share of the pie and very few were willing to compromise,” said Schodorf.
