Some Kansans got a taste of Iraq Friday, as they prepare to deploy. It was a training exercise for Kansas National Guardsmen so they'll be better prepared for when they deploy next month.

Soon, these Guardsmen will face the same reality that Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz faced... that they're not in Kansas any more. Right now, they're learning how to avoid some of the hazards they'll face in Iraq.

It's a whole different world these Kansas soldiers will be facing when they deploy. Even ordinary citizens have to be treated like they're strapped with explosives until they determine otherwise.

Sergeant Vernon Perkins of Wichita is going for the second time.

"Of course, when you get there and you get to looking around, you definitely know you're not in Kansas any more," he says.

These are members of the 287th Sustainment Brigade. They're not going door-to-door. Some of them are medics. Some of them have desk jobs. Once there, they could find themselves in harms way and they have to be ready to react.

"You're in such a high state of stress all the time that there's nothing back home that can prepare you at all," says Sergeant John Beckman.

Those in this convoy don't realize they're driving right into the enemy's kill zone. A bomb explodes right in front of them.

"You're driver has no left leg!" shouts their commander. "You're passenger has no right arm!"

While the soldiers try to care for the wounded, another IED blows up nearby. The training sergeant assigns injuries to the soldiers in the simulation. Two insurgents dressed in white come out firing on the soldiers.

This is the training these soldiers need. Once they get to Iraq, it won't be training any more. It'll be the real thing.
