Abortion Doctor Subject of Grand Jury Investigation
The Kansas Board of Healing Arts says Doctor George Tiller should not be held responsible for the 19-year-old's death.
But members of Operation Rescue say the board is protecting Tiller.
After collecting 7700 signatures, a grand jury started a probe into the death.
Members of that grand jury met at the courthouse Monday to discuss the issue for the first time, an event in itself that is considered a victory for abortion opponents.
While members of the grand jury meet inside, operation rescue members prayed in front of the Sedgwick county court house.
Troy Newman, Operation Rescue, “for the first time in the pro-life movement we have an abortion doctor that is under investigation by an independent grand jury.”
The case centers on a 19-year-old Texas woman with Down syndrome who was brought to Kansas for an abortion.
The girl died just a few days after the procedure.
A coroner ruled her death was the result of complications after the abortion, but the Kansas Board of Healing Arts ruled Dr. Tiller of wrongdoing.
Abortion opponents hope a grand jury will see it differently.
Neither Dr. Tiller nor his attorney wanted to comment on the story.
