Governor Sebelius has released details about the creation of the Division of Rural Development with the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The division will focus on rural issues, helping Kansans seeking assistance and encouraging existing rural organizations to combine their efforts. Carole Jordan, a 30-year veteran of state agriculture and commerce departments, will head the division.

In a statement released today, Sebelius says the challenge for rural areas is to recruit and retain good jobs, while maintaining quality housing and basic services.

Commerce officials will reorganize their operations to establish the division with existing funding.
