A Derby School official said class will be held at the high school today following a possible bomb threat this morning.

Shortly after 7 a.m., numerous parents called the KAKE newsroom and said police officers were not allowing students or staff members into the building.

He said Derby Police were immediately notified, and multiple searches were made through the part of the building where the suspect was found. No evidence of suspicious devices were found.

Shortly after 8 a.m., teachers were allowed back into the building. Students had to wait until 8:30 a.m.

Derby parents received this statement from the school district

The safety and security of USD 260 students and staff is of the utmost
importance. There was a break-in at DHS on Wednesday night. A bomb threat was written on a wall. Police secured and searched the building. Students were allowed back in at 8:30 A.M.

And get this, in another classroom on the white board..there was a message that said this was just a test and that the real thing would happen on friday. Why dosnt the derby school districe offer an open house tour of the high school, any bomb damage should be still aparent. that should stop or confirm the rumors.

I HEARD AN EXPLOSION WHILE SITTING IN MY SCIENCE CLASS AT DERBY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 03:16 PM
pipe bombs were the imagination of kids? when i went to school there was no more then 500 kids there. only students who like school and wanted to be there were there. You pretty much had a easy choice to get outta class being that everybody said it was off for the day.

Simon, you know what i can spell i just decide to spell how i want so just don't worry bout how i spell just go get your self a life!

i was told of pipe bombs by a teacher. not students. i had absoulutly no students say anything of a pipe bomb to me. and why were the cops telling me and my freinds to go home, yet they refused to let me leave the campus? can the school just get ONE story straight rather then telling 5 or 6 to teachers to confuse everybody. i wanted to leave school because i do not trust the schools jugment. not because i thought bombs were everywhere! this was handled horribly and it was exactly the same with the gas leak and the lock-in a few years ago.

i am a student in derby and as i "entered" the school at about 8:45 (i was refused enter otherwise) they were STILL refusing to let students enter the "G" hall. Is that relly the sound of a dedicated school? i was told over 5 differnt stories by TEACHERS,(fellow classmates are not a good source of information) and i am still wondering if this is accurate being that there is allready flaws from the article. We were NEVER evacuated, Derby has been hiding many things for the past few years. Just ask your children about the GAS LEAK that was denied by the administration yet mutiple students got sick over. Derby has been hiding many things over the years and this bomb threat may be a fight with the new set rules they have been deployed each year. either way i feel like i deserve a resonable expanation other than"a guy broke in and wrote some stuff on the walls"

anonomyous, that grammar is "texting" a shorthand kids use to look cool and try to hide meaning from teachers and parents who se them with their cell phones. I hope the schools do not allow them to se that kind of grammar in english class.

Conspiracy theorists, those with active imaginations, Principal haters, settle down! Pipe bomb rumors are the creation of students who wanted out of school today. No one was in danger in Derby. Though the district did an EXTREMELY poor job of communicating, there really was nothing to cover up, because there were no bombs. Nothing was found nor will be. Administration and the DPD did what they had to do to ensure the safety of our children by delaying the start of school until the building was confirmed safe. Nothing to cover up, just poor communication by our administration.

Steph your grammar is just as pathetic. This is WHY you need to attend school

Posted by: Yvette Location: in an idiot filled world on Aug 28, 2008 at 02:26 PM
If the idiots that call in these threats hate school so much, then just drop out! Calling in a bomb threat is just down right ignorant!

Posted by: Steph on Aug 28, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Janna why is it that you would be asking that question of vanessa? do you know her kinda sounds fishy to me how you put it! how would you know and whats the concern with it?

Posted by: Simon Location: Derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 02:04 PM
Vanessa, it seems to me like you need to actually go to school. Your grammar is horrendous

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Mulvane on Aug 28, 2008 at 01:58 PM
Well it sure is interesting that all 3 schools(Derby, Mulvane, and Winfield) had a bomb threat (guess someone thinks its funny) What a jerk to put it mildly! I too am disapointed with the NEWS the only station I saw reporting on it half way was Channel 12.Couldn't find anything on Channel 3 or 10 they weren't reporting anything on Derby or Mulvane I have family that goes to both, Im just glad it wasn't real and the kids are safe but found out from another source that Winfield got a threat too and they sent everyone home and are waiting on search dogs from Topeka so my question is how come Derby or Mulvane didn't have any search dogs come to the schools? And how come the items found at the Derby school were not reported, and why were the kids let back in the school knowing that items were found?

Posted by: Janna on Aug 28, 2008 at 01:37 PM
Oh my Vanessa... I hope your not set to graduate soon!

Posted by: Vanessa Location: derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 01:14 PM
omg. i go to derby high. nd dat wuss so stupid. we had to go to the derby middle school. nd juss sit there and most parents came to get their kids. we were at the middle school 4 like 2 hours!ALL THE TEACHERS WERE TREATIN US LIKE DOGS! then we had school. THEY DNT FIND ANYTHING!

Posted by: Simon Location: Derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Why is everyone thinking devices were found in derby. No one ever said that. It is probably all rumors.. You know as well as the next kid how rumors get spread so fast especially by high school kids. All it takes is one person to say "they probably found pipe bombs" about 10 minutes later, everyone and everyones parents will know about it through either word of mouth or text message

Posted by: I Agree on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Derby NEVER tells the truth, it's always about making them look good. They'll do anything to cover up a bad looking situation. I really believe that there were pipebombs found, I called the school and they said that the reason they shut off G hall was because that was the last hall that they had to search, but in reality g hall was where the bombs, threat, and break-in happened, and that's why it was closed off. I'm not too worried though, the truth will come out sometime, they can't expect all of those teachers to lie that long with the salary they get.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:16 PM
heh as if kake and derbys really going to tell yuo what really happens i mean come on look at todays events most of it is a cover up. this year and the past ones have gotten worse and worse what do you expect from recent events

I have a brother in that school, I asked him not to go today but he didn't want to miss out on any homework. They found BOMBS in the school and let them in anyway? and they're STILL LOOKING FOR ONE?!!

Posted by: mulvane student Location: Mulvane on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:08 PM
They kept us outside the Mulvane High School for an hour before deciding to move us to other schools for 2 hours. Most of us were in the dark about the situation till it was over.

Posted by: Chris Location: derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 12:03 PM
My wife and I also subscribe to the text alert from usd260. By the time we were sent a message the kids were already allowed into the school. IF items were found and we were not informed that is the district and law enforcement having a total disregard for the students

Posted by: concerned parent on Aug 28, 2008 at 11:05 AM
Guess kake wants to mislead the public along with Derby School officials. That why my last comment hasn't posted from 30min ago. I am very disappointed with kake and the school officials. Guess its true what they say about Derby, they cover up stuff like this, because they don't want the general public to know.

I have a student in Mulvane High school and was wondering what is going on there after the threat this morning?

Posted by: Derby Parent on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:44 AM
I am disappointed with how the school system handled this situation from the start. I subscribe to the text service for USD260 - why was I not advised to not bring my high school student in this morning due to the situation they were dealing with?! I thought this was the purpose of the text system. I did not receive anything official from the district until 8:32 stating that students were allowed back at 8:30. At this point several officers had already told students that school was cancelled. At this point, there are still numerous high school students wandering around the city - also a very bad sitaution. The school district owes us an explanation...

What is going on with the threat at Mulvane High School?

Posted by: Parent of 2 Derby High Kids Location: Derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:23 AM
School officials are not telling the truth to the media, WHY? They did however brief teachers and the transpertation department that the found six pipe bombs in G hall, they have not located the seventh one, so G hall is shut off for the day. But I made my kids go to school today after the media informed us that it was just a threat and nothing was found, but now that I have inside information on the truth, I wondering if I made the right decision. My children cann't be replaced, but the school can! School officials just don't care about the saftey of our children. And as parents of these children we have the right to know the truth. And by the way I also recieved a text from my son and he also said said the school told them about the pipebombs. Once again the media has been misinformed by the officials.

yea why wasnt Mulvane high school on the news for the same thing are they not good enough for the news

Posted by: Debbie Location: Derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 10:16 AM
Why are we getting conflicting reports about what was found at the school. We have been told they did find 6 pipebombs in G hall and they are still looking for one. I think for the safety of all the students school should have been called. I remember when attended Derby having to sit in the football stadium for hours because of a bomb threat. I don't think kids should have been told to go into the school today.

It is just the Wichita School Board doing it to take the focus from how bad usd263 sucks

Posted by: cliff Location: wichita on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:59 AM
anon, there is an artical about mulvane, this is the one about derby.

Posted by: anon Location: mulvane on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:48 AM
i love how derby is on the news but not mulvane. the same thing happened to mulvane at the same time...so where is that on the news?

Posted by: Shawna Location: Wichita on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:39 AM
I just picked up my daughter (and 4 other scared kids) from the high school. The school officials advised the children if they do not get off of the property or into their classrooms, they would be arrested. They were also not allowing the children into certain parts of the school. A teacher advised me that they were still searching the school, however, children were let back in.

Posted by: Mallory Location: Derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 09:34 AM
I'm a student at Derby, and after an hour and a half of searching, they trusted that amount of time to let back in 2000 kids. I'm not going to school today, I wouldn't feel safe. That statement about the safety of the students and staff being the most important thing is a joke. If so, then they would've shut down the school today.

As a parent of children in Derby schools I was apprehensive in coming to work this morning after hearing of the bomb threat. Eager to get more information on this situation I turned to the local news internet sites for any updates. KAKE is the ONLY station that was carrying this story. I was relieved to find out that the teachers and students were allowed back into the building which tells me that the Derby PD cleared the scene and felt it was safe for our children to return. I know that I can always count on KAKE for the most up to date information!

Was anything found in the school? Why is Mulvane under lockdown now as well?

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:33 AM
Mulvane HS students also have been outside due to a bomb threat

Posted by: FrogBabyJake Location: Wichita on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:19 AM
Probably some dumb kid not prepaired for the day, or some chaos junky who is not watching from the sidelines.

Posted by: Ryan Location: Derby on Aug 28, 2008 at 08:14 AM
Doesn't surprise me. The way they've increased security there so much makes all the students hate the school, so plenty of kids want to blow stuff up like this threat just to stick it to em.
