KAKE News is in Topeka for today's highly anticipated decision on three proposed Sumner County casinos.

A state panel has selected Harrah's and Mulvane for a Sumner Co. Casino. Do you;
Approve the decision
Oppose the decision

Penn National was selected for the casino project in Cherokee County in southeast Kansas.

Harrah's was selected for the casino project in Sumner County, which will be built off turnpike exit 33 in Mulvane.

Those on the review board say that Harrah's is better known than the other competitors and would be better for the state's economy and tourism.

The Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board made the selection Friday on a 4-3 vote. Others in the running for the 15-year contract were Marvel Gaming and Penn National Gaming.

Both Penn National and Harrah's must now clear a background check by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. This process could take a couple of months. If the background checks fail, the proposals will be nullified.

Sumner County has filed a lawsuit against Mulvane, claiming land for a casino was illegally annexed.

A law enacted last year created four state-owned casinos. The other two are in Wyandotte and Ford counties. The board will decide next month who gets those contracts.

As one of the "Bible Thumpers" which is what those opposed to the casino have been called, I would like to point out what God has to say about this matter. Mulvane City Council - Listen Up! 1 Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." NIV I will be waiting to see how this all turns out, and to see what kinds of grief you have brought upon Mulvane.

Is everyone forgetting the casino was not for the benefit of one county or one city? It is for the benefit of the State of Kansas. I believe Sumner County commissioners forgot that when they did not endorse all 4 proposals.

Posted by: Brenda Location: Wichita on Aug 25, 2008 at 04:28 PM
I'm tired of the voices of the voting public being ignored. I'm against the Casinos being anywhere near Sedgwick County.

Posted by: terri Location: Mulvane on Aug 25, 2008 at 03:22 PM
It is a sad thing that those of us in Mulvane who were opposed to this location will also have to pay the price for the mistakes of our greedy city council. The majority of this council was only thinking of their own pocketbooks and not what the citizens of Mulvane want.

Don't you think this report should have also mentioned the lawsuit by the Potawatamie tribe? What begins in litigation will end in litigation.

It'll be the bible Thumper loons picking up the pieces of broken lives, bankrupt people, gambling addicts and their destitute familes while the high rolling money goes out of state to the crime bosses.

We do not need a casino in Kansas, esopecially not in our area.

Posted by: Angel Location: Mulvane on Aug 24, 2008 at 02:50 PM
The board did not listen to the voters! 1. 82% of Mulvane registered voters live in Sedgwick Co. Only 18% live in Sumner Co. 2. In the Aug. 7, 2007 casino referendum in Sedgwick Co., 61% of the voters living in Mulvane opposed a casino. 3. A majority of citizens in the area near the Mulvane exit of interstate 35 oppose a casino. In the Sedgwick Co. referendum, 59% of the voters in House District 81, the district in the southern part of Sedgwick Co., opposed a casino.

Two children were killed last year at the intersection of US 81 and Peck Rd (119 Ave). This is where the Casino is to be built. Alot of other accidents have occured at this intersection. How many other accidents will happen do to the increased traffic flow because of the casino. Wellington worked for this casino and it has a safer location. Why didn't the Gaming Board take the opinion of the Sumner County Commissioners.

Posted by: Joe Location: Rose Hill, Ks on Aug 23, 2008 at 04:08 PM
Thank goodness I live in Butler county. I feel sorry for the people that will have to live next to the casino and did not want it. Hopefully someday the State of Kansas will listen to their people.

Posted by: pat Location: mulvane on Aug 23, 2008 at 11:55 AM
I guess if Shelly Hansel doesn't like living in Kansas she might want to move to Oklahoma. The board vote the right way and did what the State of Kansas ask them to do. Because we live in Mulvane didn't mean we didn't want a casnio. That is far from the truth. We have had supports for Harrahs from the very first. Where was the support for Wellington? A hand full of people that show up on the last day of the meeting is not what I call support. I am so happy that Mulvane was not left out. It could have been so much easier if the c of c had done their job in the first place and endorced all 4 casinos.

Posted by: Wellington Gal Location: Wellington on Aug 23, 2008 at 08:17 AM
Good Luck Mulvane...You are going to need it. Look at Harrahs history.. Just because it has a NAME!!!! That NAME is going to keep alot of people out of your town. I had never heard of First Council, Native Lights or Kaw Southwind Casinos before they were built but guess what?? I still go there..A Name..Hogwash.... The name has nothing to do with it. As for Shelly saying she was ashamed to be a Kansan well LOOK at what our "Leaders in the racing commision had done. They didn't LISTEN. You can beton one thing when I go to vote next you can bet that I will be looking for cetain names a little more closly. Good job racing commision you've just taken jobs away from my childen grandchildren greatgrandchildren, etc... IF Harrahs is built it won't last long..Mark my words...Once they get out of what they want out of Kansas they will be gone or better yet we will get rid of them..

Posted by: Sumner Resident on Aug 23, 2008 at 06:26 AM
It is a toss up which is worse Wellington or Mulvane they are both full of trash, crime and drug filled schools. Now they are bringing the trash and crime to the rural community dwellers in the county. How horrible for them to NOW have to raise children and grandchildren next to this casino filth! Open bidding on property for sale as long as you are a liquor store, bar, pawn shop, or tattoo parlor. The city of Mulvane and Lottery Commissioners should at least buy the surrounding homes from the people who care about quality of life and want to move, and THE OFFICIALS SHOULD LIVE THERE! JUST WAIT UNTIL ELECTION TIME!!!

Posted by: mrt2525 Location: Sumner County on Aug 23, 2008 at 01:04 AM
Way to go Sedgwick county you got your Casino. Sedgwick county will benefit more from Harrahs than Sumner county. Business will be built surrounding the Casino and most of those I would bet will be in Sedgwick county. Also it will be closer for Sedgwick county residents to go to work there, shop there, and gambel. Those of us that live in Southern Sumner county will not be driving there for employment. Wellington just made better since in location for Sumner County. Wellington is centrally located and all the people of Sumner county would have better access to jobs this provided.

Posted by: Alfalfa Location: Wellington on Aug 22, 2008 at 09:16 PM
Let Wichita support the casino like they did Wild West World, Shocker football, Wrangler baseball, Greyhound Park, Wings soccer, and now Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

It will not take long for all the people with law degrees to get this set aside for years. Thanks for good Sumner County lawyers.

What idiots work at Mulvane?that you don't listen to the people of your town.

I am so glad this is finally over. Now we can get started on the Hooters out by our new Wal-Mart.

Posted by: Brian Location: Wichita on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:54 PM
Mulvane is by far the best decision. Having the casion as close to Wichita as possible is the best way for it survive. Wellington is a crappy town and can't support that kind of business. If Wellington had it, you'd see travel trailers parked out beside the motels.

Posted by: Kurt Location: Sumner County on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:31 PM
The Mulvane land was annexed because the sumner county commissioners did not do the right thing by not sending all the casino proposals to the state gaming board. The sumner county commissioners were trying to control where the casino was to be built in sumner county, and it back fired on them. I'll bet their decision might be different if the commissioners had to do it over again. I'm very happy for sedgwick county, their going to get some return on this. After all, the majority of the money spent at the casino is going to come from sedgwick county.

Posted by: Proud of Wellington on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:25 PM
Look at any of the comments sites and you will not see one comment from any one who lives in Wellington who is saying they are glad the casino is not going to Wellington but I have sure seen several comments from Mulvane people who are unhappy that the Harrah's circus is coming to their town...what does that tell us? Mulvane united to welcome the circus...don't think so.

Posted by: xxx on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:09 PM
I'll be surprised if actual revenue is half of what they projected. What's the big deal Well(of tears)ington and Mulvane are about 15 mi. apart. That won't make a difference in the long term. Everyone will lose.

Posted by: ALICE Location: RR MULVANE on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:03 PM
NOT ONE PENNY TO PEOPLE IN SEDGWICK COUNTY. LET THE SUMNER COUNTY LAWSUITS BEGIN. TEACH THE MULVANE CITY AND CASINO SUPPORTS ,THE TRUE COST OF DOING AND MAKING BUSINESS DECISIONS LIKE COMMON STREET TRASH.

Posted by: E J Location: El Dorado Kansa on Aug 22, 2008 at 07:53 PM
I think they made a big mistake on Mulvane. When you look at the highway system, Wellington has better access to the casino than Mulvane. I feel that Kansa will be losing money and we will have to support the casino when it gets in money problems. Wellington is closer to Oklahoma , so that would help bring people to the casino. I know for me I will still go to Oklahoma to gamble. It is easier to get to than the Mulvane Casino will be. An like I said there are several highways that go into Wellington from different directions than Mulvane. So we as Kansas have lost in the decision to build the casino in Mulvane. I hope Mulvane is happy.

this is corruption at its best i wonder what the lottery com. is doing with thier cut right now .Shelly keep up the good work lady at least wellington residents know you cant be bought. What a dispicable display dirty politics and a regretion in tactics, how shameful you Mulvane City Council Member must feel. Do any of you live near the casino site, or how about even in Sumner County? What a despicable display of dirty politics and unethical annexation tactics. How shameful Mulvane City Council Members must feel to use an antiquated rope annexation to cheat Sumner County residents out of their full entitlement of the casino money benefit. Do any of you live near the casino site, or how about even in Sumner County? All casino income received by the city of Mulvane should at least be allocated to Mulvane Sumner County residents ONLY! What a slimy success for the city of Mulvane. Sedgwick County will benefit much more then Sumner County ever will from this decision!

Posted by: laughing at Mulvane on Aug 22, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Don't celebrate yet Mulvane. I believe the Harrah's has to be up and running within two years of being awarded the contract. Provided Harrah's passes the background check which I doubt, the lawsuits will keep them from breaking ground for at least two years. You will never see a casino in Mulvane.

Posted by: bob Location: wichita on Aug 22, 2008 at 06:49 PM
im happy that the casino is coming in to mulvane. at last we'll have a nearby entertainment source. GO MULVANE!

Posted by: Brad Location: Derby on Aug 22, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Sorry Wellington County,"oops". The casino is going in Sumner County, exit 33 in Mulvane.

Posted by: Terri Location: Oxford on Aug 22, 2008 at 06:24 PM
I have to wonder why our county commissioners were asked to make a recommendation from the proposed lottery sites, since the committee didn't seem to take that into account. Maybe I've simply become cynical, but I'm left to wonder if this choice was the committee's way of ensuring that Sumner County doesn't get a casino. With two lawsuits pending, it would surprise me if Harrah's is able to get their project off the ground. Why did they pull out of the Prairie Band Casino and sign the covenant not to compete? Can we expect them to remain in Sumner County if they do manage to open a destination casino?

Posted by: Beverly Location: Central Ks on Aug 22, 2008 at 06:22 PM
Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!Finally a Harrahs where you don't have to go to KC. I am too, too excited.

Posted by: Jennifer Location: Mulvane Sumner County on Aug 22, 2008 at 06:20 PM
It is a great shame that the state of Kansas chose NOT to listen to the populous of Sumner County residents in this issue. The choice was made to select not only the unethical practices presented by the city of Mulvane in its annexation tactics, but also the poor business practices of a corrupt casino that has already failed to comply with its current legal contracts. What positive experience does the state hope to gain by dealing with the unethical business practices these two entities have displayed? Sham on you Kansas Lottery Commissioners for trumping money over ethics, community, and family’s homes!!! Today I am ashamed to be a native Kansan and a Mulvane, Sumner County resident!

AND ALSO HOW MANY OF THE SO-CALLED LEADERS OF THE COMMUNITY WE WILL BE SEEING THERE.

It is a shame that most people forget that Sumner County will still get benefits from the casino being in the County. Let's start working together and be proud of our county. If we make this a war, then we all have already lost. It is time to move on and focus on what is best for ALL OF SUMNER COUNTY.

Posted by: Former Sumner Cty resident Location: Derby, ks on Aug 22, 2008 at 05:28 PM
It looks to me that the numbers were behind the wellington site. They had the county commision endorsement. Harrah's has financial problems. They jumped into the mix of the propsals at the end of the selection process. Hmmm seems to me like the higher powers that be want this to fail, so they can come back in 4 years or so and have the only casino built in segwick county. It makes good sence, divide and conquer. If this gets turned down they have already said it would not go to Marvel *which it is the best one*. It would be a lengthy reselection process that would take years yet again. What a better way to benifit sedgwick county, they will have the new arena built and be ready for another expensive project. Maybe if you find the money trail it may just lead you back to sedgiwck county and its officials.

I have no vested interest in the location of the casino. I care neither way. What I do want to know is how Harrah's is being allowed to breach their contract with the Prairie Band Potawatomi and the no-compete clause they signed on that contract; Another blatant attempt to thwart Indians by the State of Kansas, for choosing Harrah's, and by Harrah's for disregarding their contract with the Indians.

Posted by: Not a Wellington resident Location: Not from Wellington on Aug 22, 2008 at 05:01 PM
Being a southwestern Sumner County resident, I supported the Wellington site because of the jobs created that could be filled by residents of all of Sumner County. It will not be as feasible for those of us in Caldwell, South Haven, Argonia, Conway Springs, etc. to drive to Mulvane. If the casino gets built, it will be interesting to see how many jobs are created and filled by Sedwick County residents. Sure Sumner County will share in the profit, but what about profiting by the jobs created by having a casino?

Posted by: Michael K. Location: Mulvane on Aug 22, 2008 at 04:56 PM
Right now the city of Mulvane cant gaurantee coverage from the fire dept. on the west side of town. Look how much tax dollars school districs with large stores like Wal Mart manage to rake in.... If thats possible.. how much will a Casino bring? Mulvane needs some larger employers!!! Wichita had its chance for opprutunity..but bible thumbers who poured thousands of dollars in their budget to spend on convencing people to vote NO. After the vote many at the dog track lost their jobs. I encourage everyone to do some research.. How much in tax dollars will the schools, county, city, recieve?? What would they not recieve without?? ..and by the way good job to KAKE for not taking sides on this issue like the GM at channel 3 did durring the Wichita Slot Machine vote!!!

I left Wellington some time ago it is hard to come back and see the shape it is in the State Goverment is not looking out for small towns. We need to ask your state if we are not part of Kansas why do we need to pay tax here.If the vote doses not count isnt that taxation with out representation If you have more good ideas DONT TELL MULVANE THEY NEED SOMEONE TO HELP THEM. THEY ARE FOLLOWERS not LEADERS.

I will continue to drive to OKLAHOMA... This was an injustice... I really feel sorry for alll those that live in the neighborhood of the "wonderful Harrahs" (LOL) Let's just place a bet that those who voted in favor of Harrah's will be retiring real soon with their "new" found money that is now lining their pockets... I guess now I have the attitude WHY VOTE??? Guess our vote doesn't count... Well not in this case anyway...

Posted by: hot rod Location: Derby on Aug 22, 2008 at 04:33 PM
I really hope the Wellington folks aren't a bunch of sore losers...there is still plenty of benefit in the Harrah's Casino for them too. The Penn National folks kept saying that it was only a 9 minute drive between Wellington and Mulvane, and there will be over a thousand new jobs...so go for it! I was really impressed that over 100 Harrah's supporters from Mulvane were at the meeting in Topeka today (two busses full)for the vote, but there were no busses from Wellington or any organized support, just a few public officials attending. I'm sorry, but I didn't see much public support from Wellington. So how about you two towns burying the hatchet and doing something Sumner County can be proud of. The Sumner County Commissioners need to drop their lawsuit as they implied that the would at the hearing in Belle Plaine...Gary Martin (chairman of their board) told Matt All that if Harrah's won the State's endorsement the Commissioners would assume the best applicant won, and endorse it.

Posted by: Tracy Location: Sumner County on Aug 22, 2008 at 04:22 PM
It's sad, Sedgwick county voted down the casino, but they are going to reap the benefits the people of Sumner county worked so hard for. Yes, the casino will be on Mulvane's land (the part in Sumner County) however, they didn't do the leg work. This really stinks.....

Posted by: Susan Location: Oxford on Aug 22, 2008 at 04:20 PM
Who was the committee representing? We have no representation that heeded the votes of Sumner Co. How can a business win the bid with $19 million still not collected (nor a guarantee from Harrahs to provide), talk of reorganization for Harrah's the night before the Belle Plaine meeting, obvious water issues on the land proposed, lack of support from the majority of Sumner residents, infrastructure and emergency services not in place, citizens affected not allowed to speak at the Mulvane council meetings, and possible legislation blocking the build. It seems to be a stretch of the imagination to have heard that the committee would remain open minded. I think it is above and beyone open mindedness. Sadly, this decision has confirmed the lack of faith citizens have in government officials protecting the rights of the people. There is also a lack of faith in those officials for voting this way. What ever enticed them, the perception of the reason raises the question of ethics.

i am so happy that the Mulvane site was chosen for the Casino, It will help us with many things including property tax, schools and bring a source of pleasure to the people here. It will help the locals with employment opportunities, Thanks Harrahs. We welcome you to our town.

Sorry for your luck Wellington, but it is still in your back yard just as Wichita. Your lucky its that close, Should have been in Sedgwick County to begin with but with our poor voting procedure it was turned down. When sedgwick county keeps these Casinc's alive, the will then realize and have them in Sedgwick county. Consider yourself lucky you wont have to drive to Wichita and just have to drive to Mulvane. OUTSTANDING!!! It's about time something exciting happened around here. A casino is just what Sedgwick - oops Sumner County needs. Jobs, restaurants, entertainment, everything Sedgwick County voted against. Wonder how many Sedgwick County license plates we'll see?

Posted by: jackie Location: Riverdale on Aug 22, 2008 at 03:55 PM
The city of Wellington has suffered from a slow death for sometime now. Venture downtown to see empty buildings and sidewalks. The leadership planned on the casino to save them, but alas reality has occured. Time to regroup and start to remember your just a small town and not a big city. Some of your department heads need to understand what we need and what we can live without. Your going to wind up with the best equipment in the state but no one to operate it. Only so many taxpayers can pay for so much, then the money runs out when no one can afford to live there any longer. To live Well is to live Wellington, but who can afford to live there?

What was the point of including a majority vote in the legislation. The majority of Sumner County residence were not heard today. Instead the board allowed sedgwick County resident's to have a say in the the process! Shame on the state for not listening to the will of the people. Maybe the governor should not make quotes the board are going to ignore! "We don't what a casino were it is not wanted." Maybe the governor should retract that statement.

So much for our vote. I guess this shows our young people that why should they bother to register or vote because it doesnt matter. Big companies and money always get their way. I hope that someone investigates the board to see who was paid to vote in favor of Harrahs. The 2 lawsuits pending hopefully will change this outcome. If they lose they annexation law suit good luck Harrahs you'll have no land to build.

Congratulations to Mulvane. Enjoy all the problems you are going to have with this casino. I truly feel sympathy for all those who live near the site and who are going to be hugely affected by the Harrah's casino. And there is no reason to feel sorry for Shelley Hansel...we all here in Wellington are VERY PROUD of her and all of those who fought and fought to the end to try to get the casino located here. You all made us very proud and make this town the wonderful place that it is!! Now we can sit back and watch all the disasters happen in Mulvane and laugh because we all know this was NOT a good decision.

Isn't that proposed site in a flood plain?? Heard that the man who owns the land is wealthy and the land was worthless because of the flood area, until now. Also, if it is like the one in Pittsburg, Harrahs only got it because they gave the state the biggest piece of the pie. Wellington should have gotten it, the fought longes and hardest for it. Shelley Hansel fought to get this on the ballot and for it to be in Wellington.

I see that the people as a whole in sumner county didn't not get their wish of a centrally located casino. I say put it up again for a vote and see if it passes this time. I dont' gamble but I do believe in the majority rules. The commitee was suppose to look at 2 things how it helps the growth of the county and state. obviously they didn't. they looked at the state profit. this is far from over I believe lets just wait to see how it turns out. Congrats to Mulvane for now. I see an empty casino within 5 to 7 years after it opens if it ever opens. Wichita and their county got their casino that they voted down. amazing how people in this state get worked over for doing the right thing and the government comes in and change the rules to fit what they want.

The "strip" of land Mulvane annexed was solely for the purpose of control and for the gain the casino would bring to the city's budget. After the city voted in majority for No casino's in Mulvane, and now the governing body of Mulvane went against the majority favor of their own town, is completely stupid and I hope that the Sumner Co. officials and the state of Ks realize how selfish this move was by Mulvane.

Glad the voters of Sedgwick Countyare keeping this boondoggle out of Sedgwick County.

Good for Mulvane & area. Now we have a place to go look for jobs, etc. Also, now we don't have far to drive for a nice meal & entertainment with the price of gas & all

Sedgwick Co. people voted against the casino, yet our representatives that we voted to represent our wishes must have forgotten their geography. Mulvane is just outside Sedgwich Co. As a business owner, I hope the state will direct some of that windfall income they are expecting and pass a bill to help the businesses who will be hurt by consumers' extra money going for gambling losses. Gambling losses are the major income for any casino and without such would they would close. Maybe this would be a great time to lower taxes and help those people and business that depend on disposable income to have a job.

They Did listen to the voices, Sumner Mulvane residents have voices too. There's always two sides to a vote. There has to be a Winner & there has to be a Loser. In this case, The Location for Mulvane IS the Winner. Yea for Mulvane!!! WE deserve it. I can't wait.

Congratulations to Mulvane!!! For 30 years I have lived in the City of Mulvane on the SUMNER COUNTY SIDE. I pay the tax on my home, purchase car tags and pay personal property tax all to SUMNER COUNTY. Please remember Wellington that there are other sumner county folks than those that live in Wellington.

Listen to all of the whining from the wellington people! What do you mean the voice of the people. Obviously the majority voted for the casino and obviously the land owners were willing to sell. Finally something coming to our area so none of us will have to keep traveling to do 'anything' anymore. Horray!!!
