No charges have been filed in an accident that killed a Hawker Beechcraft machinist.
Shortly before 5 a.m., a 45-year-old man was hit by a pickup truck at the Machinist strike headquarters, on Greenwich in between Central and Kellogg. Police said the victim had parked in an overflow parking lot and was running across Greenwich Road when he was hit. Both the victim and the driver were on their way to a Machinists rally.
The Machinists Union has identified the victim as Jeff Hart. Hart had been a member of IAM for two years.
Wichita Police Sgt. Charles Newman said skid marks indicate the 49-year-old driver tried to stop, but still ran into Hart. Hart was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
Donations for Hart's family are being collected today in every IAM-represented facility in Wichita.
Hawker Beechcraft released a statement on Hart's death this afternoon.
"The company offers our most sincere condolences to his family and friends, and will be assisting the family during this difficult time", said Hawker Beechcrafty spokesperson Andrew Broom.
Police said the driver has not been charged, and the investigation is continuing.
A Celebration of Life Services for Jeff Hart will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, at Countryside Christian Church, 1919 S. Rock Road, Wichita, KS.
