An entire northeast Kansas town remains under a boil order due to a water line break at a pumping station.

Water service is gradually being restored in Atchison, but city officials said Tuesday it will not immediately be safe to drink. The line that burst at 8:00 a.m. Monday was a temporary pipe attached to rental equipment the city was using to remedy a previously failed pump.

The break flooded the water plant, shorted electrical panels and knocked out the city's remaining two water pumps. That left more than 10,000 residents without water.

Crews pumped out the flooded station and got the pumps running again, but officials said it will take several hours to refill the city's water towers and restore water pressure to homes.
