The coach of the Newton Swim Club was killed in a car crash on his way to a meet in Lawrence.

Thirty-one-year-old Jim Randall was eastbound on U.S 50 near Strong City on Friday, when he drove left of center and collided with an oncoming car.

A 13-year-old swimmer who was with him suffered only minor injuries.

Most of the other swimmers already had arrived in Lawrence. About 15 Newton swimmers competed in the meet Saturday, with the help of coaches from other teams.

Before coming to Newton about seven months ago, Randall coached swimmers in Grinnell, Iowa, where he also attended college.

The service for Randall likely will be in his native California, where his parents live. A memorial service is being planned in Newton.
