Grass Fire

February 11 - Dozens of firefighters are keeping a close watch on the remains of a grassfire in Harvey County near the town of Burrton. They're hopeful they finally have the blaze under control.

The grassfire started Thursday afternoon and reignited Friday morning. Fueled by strong winds, the blaze burned a total of 8,000 acres over the two days.

Crews from several local fire departments have been working around the clock to keep the fire contained. On Saturday, they stayed on the scene to keep an eye on hot spots and put out any new fires that started up.

A portion of U.S. Highway 50 was closed in the Burrton area Friday because of thick smoke. It has since reopened. Burrton High School had to cancel their Friday night basketball games because of thick smoke in the area.

Residents who were evacuated from their homes have been allowed to return. There are no reports of injuries.
