Chris Boyd's five year old Miniature Pinscher acted tough, but was no match
for an aggressive pit bull at least four times his size. "Taz" was mauled
by the neighbor dog Wednesday afternoon. A veterinarian had to put him
down.

"We're all just heartbroken about it," Boyd said Thursday. "But there are a
lot of kids on this block. It could have been one of them instead of my
dog."

Neighbors called police to report the pit bull wandering the neighborhood
around 1:00 Wednesday. When authorities arrived, the dog lead them back to
1536 N. Piatt. At the vacant home investigators found five more pit bulls
believed to be part of a vicious dog fighting ring.

"In my 27 years, I've never seen anything like it," said Dennis Graves,
Animal Control Supervisor for the city.

In the home, authorities discovered two treadmills they believe were used to
improve the dogs' stamina. They discovered syringes and rawhide, even a
sledgehammer they say may have been used to kill under performing fighter
dogs. Blood was splattered on some of the interior walls.

The six pit bulls removed from the house are now at the city's animal
shelter. Several have visible scars and open wounds. One limps on a
potentially broken leg. On their cages reads a sign: "Aggressive Animal."

By themselves, they almost appear timid. But authorities say they're
trained to kill when placed with other animals. Somebody made the dogs
intentionally dangerous.

"This is cruelty at its worst," said Environmental Services director Kay
Johnson. "They were pitting dog against dog."

If found, the owners of the dogs could face animal cruelty charges.
Authorities say the home was rented, but nobody lived inside.

The city says pit bulls are the number one offenders when it comes to dog
bites and attacks on other pets and people.

In the first three months of 2008, pit bulls accounted for 22% of all dog
complaints, and 35% of all euthanized dogs at the city shelter.

Specifically, investigators looked into 95 dog bites from January to March
this year. Pit bulls were responsible for almost 25% of those bites. Of
the 15 dogs deemed "dangerous" so far this year, 10 have been pit bulls.

Johnson says owners can have a big influence on a dog's behavior, but that
pit bulls are naturally aggressive.

The city will not adopt any pit bull out to the general public because of
that aggressive disposition, and because it's possible the dog will end up
right back in the system. Because the owners of these six pit bulls could
face criminal charges, it's unlikely they will come forward to claim the
dogs. Officials say that leaves them with very little choice but to
euthanize the animals once the courts grant custody to animal control.

Anybody with any information in this or any other organized dog fighting
ring is urged to call police.

This story disgusts me. How can anyone be so cruel? I treat my dog as a family member. I HIGHLY disagree with the comment in this story about how pit bulls are "naturally agressive". My dog is a pit bull and she is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had. I have two children, a 6 year and a 20 month old and she is very loving with them. She also great around other dogs. This is why I say they are not "naturally agressive", it's all in how the owner raises them.

It is very sad that dogs are used as a sport. It's bad enough that humans fight and call that a sport but it's their choice to do it, a dog has no voice to say yes or no to fighting. we need tougher laws on animal cruelty. we should treat the person in the same manner as they are treating the dog. tie them up for hours on end and not feed them lord only knows what else they do. I agree that a person found guilty of animal fighting and cruelty should get the death penalty, or better yet we should chain them up and let the animal loose on them. Its called KARMA!!!!!!

My 12 year old son and I watched the news report regarding the abused dogs Thursday evening. My son reminded me to remind you (KAKE and the public) that there are no bad breeds. There are only bad people. Bad people who abuse helpless animals and who should be punishest to the fullest extent of the law. My son suggested the death penalty. My son and I discussed this while he was playing the the newest member of our family; a five month old pit bull puppy. Incidently, the puppy gets along well with our cats, neighbors, guests and other animals.

ANY dog adopted out can end up back in the system. Pit bulls are not naturally any more vicious than any other breed, they are just more likely to do what people train them to do. The media has failed to mention all the times OTHER breeds have attacked, as well as all the times pit bulls have not attacked. They have not told you about all the pitbulls who are homeless because they refuse to be mean! For the TRUTH, talk to an experienced, well educated animal professional like a veterinarian or dog behaviorist. They meet friendly, well behaved, non aggressive, good tempered pit bulls daily. For every pit bull that attacks someone, there are thousands of pit bulls that die of old age after 10 years without ever causing any harm to anyone. ALL pit bull attacks can be prevented with proper training, socialization, exercise and supervision. Also, many reports are made by people who are unsure of the actual breed, but to make the story sound more gruesome, they say "It was a pit bull!"

I don't agree with training dogs to fight but I also don't believe that it's just pitbulls or there breed. It has alot to do with how they are raised and it just makes me sick that their are people out there that do these things and give the breed a bad rep. I think these people should have to be kept in cages without water and see how they feel.

this just makes me sick. I can't imagine why no arrests have been made.

Perhaps it's because the animal control officers are busy taking care of any of the hundreds of other calls that come into them daily concerning everything from pit bulls to donkeys running loose in the hood. There's only 12 of them, have some patience.

Why hasn't someone been arrested???

I am thankful that WPD was able to get animal control out there. I've personally made 4 calls to animal control regarding the pit bull breeding farm that goes on behind us......I have yet to see them show up.
