Smoke Free Wichita?

Salina is currently the only Kansas town to have a restaurant smoking ban. Some people are hoping that many more cities, including Wichita, follow the trend.

The Tobacco Free Wichita Coalition is gathering information to see if there is enough support in Wichita to pass a smoking ban.

Jon Suddeth manages Heroes Sports Bar. He doesn't smoke, but says he's open to suggestions about possible bans.

American Cancer Society spokesperson Trisha Walls is a member of the coalition. She says there are too many smoke friendly restaurants in Wichita that people can't go to because of health concerns.

A ban would be anything but healthy for some places. Tina Rose manages Mort's Cigar Bar. She's against the proposed ban because it would hurt her business. She says smoking is just a part of nightlife.

The Tobacco Free Wichita Coalition is working to find out how the public feels about the issue. They soon hope to bring it before the candidates for mayor and city council.

Right now, 70 percent of all businesses in Wichita are smoke free. The American Cancer Society reports that smoking has declined nationally since 1997.
