Extreme Makeover Home Edition Secrets

Nov. 6-Inside the Nutsch home... What are the secrets Extreme Makeover Home Edition is keeping from you?

The ABC reality show came to Wichita and surprised a Butler County family last month.

As you probably know, Extreme Makeover Home Edition swore the Nutsch family to secrecy.

No one is allowed inside their home until the show airs in a few weeks.

But KAKE News got a sneak peek for you.

Day one... Nothing but a hole where the house once sat.

The Nutsch family meets with Ty Pennington , the star of Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

Designers for the show say Kevin Nutsch, the father of the family, actually seems sad when they arrive for the surprise.

Designer Ed Sanders says, "He's a proud man, for starters. He doesn't want to ask for help, but there's nothing wrong with asking for help if you need it"

While on vacation in August, the Nutsch family home explodes because of a propane leak.

There's nothing left.

Architect Dave Trimble says, "I think you could build these guys four walls and a roof, they'd be happy because they are such a great family."

But that won't do.

The show's producers go to Law Kingdon, a local architecture firm, for help.

Architect Michael Cathcart says, "We got a phone call that we had 15 minutes to get to a planning meeting."

Extreme Makeover needed a house plan in 72 hours.

"I was floored. I couldn't believe that they were in Wichita and that we were going to get to work on it"

Dave Trimble and Michael Cathcart scramble to come up with a plan.

One of the first drawings they sketched out included an upstairs four bedrooms and a big bathroom.

There's also a bonus room over the garage.

Downstairs is a large kitchen area with a hearth room and a huge master suite.

But, the designers say every five minutes something changed.

For the first time we learn secrets about the house.

It is a prairie style, two story, five bedroom home.

It is 3800 square feet and it has solar panels on the roof.

It also includes things that you and I would not normally put in the house to ensure that utility bills wouldn't strap them.

Thousands of local volunteers built all of this in just seven days.

KAKE News has also learned the Nutsch chickens are even getting a new home.

Kansas State University students won a special award for their design of a new chicken coop.

Designer Ed Sanders gives KAKE News some other hints .

"A lot of people think it's all bells and whisltes, but we do like to give practical things that can benefit the family money wise."

He tells us this time Ty's 'secret room' is Kevin Nutsch's workshop filled with lots of surprises like a brand new saw mill and thousands of dollars in tools... Tools he lost in the explosion.

Sanders says Kevin emerged a new man when he saw what the Wichita community did for him.

"The man who got out of the limo looked like a man full of the beans of life. He had sparks in his eyes holding his head up and holding on to his wife for life."

Sanders also told us he used some extinct wood he found on the Nutsch's property to build the family something very special.

The show says this Wichita project is one of the top five they've ever done thanks to all the help from the community.

Coming up next Sunday... A touching story about the Nutsch family that makes you realize just how special this family really is
