It was a story that made national headlines. Jessica Lunsford kidnapped from her Florida home in February.

The girl's body found nearly a month later. Police say John Couey, a registered sex offender, confessed to kidnapping Jessica, raping her then burying her alive.

It's that tragic story that has Donna Roberts taking action. She's circulating a petition around Wichita to get a version of "Jessica's Law" passed in Kansas.

"The goal behind this is to put these signatures in the lap of our governor so she can see that our state supports some version of Jessica's law," said Roberts.

Under the law, offenders convicted of sexually assaulting children would face a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison. Roberts says the law is needed to keep Kansas kids safe.

"We have too many gaps in our system. Sexual offender could do from one year to 30 years, it's the discression of the judge and what kind of act they committ on the child. To me, any sexual act on a child is wrong so it should be the 25 minimum," said Roberts.
