Tonight's viewer asks:

"Is the Epic Center in downtown Wichita still the tallest building in Kansas?"

Good question.

The centerpiece to Wichita's skyline is the Epic Center, which was constructed in 1987. It opened for business in 1989. With more than 20 floors, it towered 325 feet, becoming the tallest building in the state of Kansas.

Originally, the plans for the Epic Center called for "twin towers", but the plans were scrapped in favor of a single tower due to the fear that the occupancy level would never reach capacity.

The Epic Center is still, even 20 years after its construction, the tallest building in the Sunflower State.

Compared to other states, there are only 10 states whose tallest buildings are shorter than the Epic Center, including Alaska, Idaho, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

By the end of 2008, however, Idaho will have a taller building than the Epic Center, which will put Kansas in the bottom 10 states of tallest buildings.

I think that it's time to build a premier skyscraper for downtown Wichita. Des Moines, Omaha and Tulsa are all in our size range, why shouldn't we have a skyline on par with theirs?
