A couple found themselves the targets in a shooting in North Wichita overnight.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., a husband and his 20-year-old wife got out of their car in their driveway in the 1100 Blk. of N. Fairview.

But a group of assailants were nearby and opened fire on the unsuspecting couple, said Wichita Police Lt. Ralph Clark.

A bullet struck the wife in her side. Emergency crews rushed her to a Wichita hospital in critical condition where she underwent surgery.

Clark said investigators are having difficulty finding leads in the case because no one appears to know anything about the shooters. Police are searching for a suspect.
