A Kansas horse race track is saddled with financial troubles. Losses in state revenue force Eureka Downs to delay the start of its racing season.

Normally at this time, Eureka Downs would be busy training for the racing season. This weekend is the start of racing season across the country. In Kansas, state gaming revenue is down so much, the track won't open until May 31st. Eureka Downs will race six days this year, instead of 21.

Each year a percentage of revenue from the dog tracks in Wichita and Kansas City go to Eureka Downs, but when Wichita's Greyhound Park closed, it took a major hit.

In 2005, Eureka Downs got $487,500. In 2006, $450,000. Last year, $438,000. This year, just $215,000 will go to the horse track. That is a loss of $223,000.

Next year when slots start up in Kansas City, new money will be available. Eureka Down is in its 136th year of racing. Making it a winner this year, is the goal.
