Senator Sam Brownback has accused China of ordering U.S.-owned hotels to install Internet filters to spy on international visitors during the summer Olympics.
The Kansas Republican made that charge at a news conference Thursday where he and other lawmakers criticized China's human rights record. He also urged President Bush not to attend the Olympics' opening ceremony.
Brownback said he has seen memos about the Internet filter request from two U.S.-owned hotels, but he wouldn't name them. He said he will release the information to encourage public pressure to persuade the Chinese government to drop the demand.
Brownback said he would press his case for Bush not to attend the Olympic opening ceremonies when the president visits tornado-damaged Greensburg on Sunday.
