Efforts by a Wichita company could create a program to teach Hutchinson State Prison inmates to be Braille transcribers. The three-year pilot program was discussed recently between a group of inmates and Randolph Cabral, president of the Wichita-based Kansas Braille Transcription Institute.

Cabral's group transcribes things from simple brochures and books to complex college textbooks.

The inmates would study for six months to one year before taking a national certification test, after which the actual work would begin. If the pilot is successful, the Hutchinson prison would become the 24th in the nation to operate this service.
