Former Sheriff Begins Jail Sentence

Former Reno County Sheriff Larry Leslie entered the Saline County jail today to begin a one-year sentence today. He surrendered to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski says he won't look at
Leslie as a former sheriff -- he'll be treated as a law-breaker.

Leslie pleaded guilty to two counts of entering into a
prohibited contract with a private company to run the Reno County
Jail annex, in Hutchinson. His successor, Sheriff Randy Henderson,
says he wasn't comfortable putting Leslie in the jail he used to
manage.

Leslie could be released after 90 days, if he comes up with a plan to pay restitution.

Hutchinson lawyer Gerald Hertach was owner of the company that
ran the annex. Hertach will begin his sentence January 31st, in
Rice County.
